*sigh* lots of misinformation here. Here's my 74k M42 stock doing 0-60 in what seems to be 7 seconds flat on studded snow tires (spin city). 10.1 seconds to 0-60? not even a 325e does it that slow..
And that same M42 got me a 138mph speeding ticket.
tl;dr, non-tired POS M42's are as fast as a B25, but the power band is completely different. The feel is completely different. I've owned many a 6'er E30 including a M50 swapped one, and only 2 M42's, and by far my M42 E30 is much more fun and enjoyable. but that's because I like easy-to-toss cars.
I'm only here for news on this. What gearing did you say you had?
Not really the m42 dose about 12.4hp/RPM/L as good as any modern engine. I would challenge you to find a modern car that dose significantly more. Not to mention I get 7lt per 100km in mine which is not as great as some of the latest cars but is still good.

M42's are getting a bad wrap ? I ran a 2:12 on CALI SPEEDWAY 2.8 mile roval course with stock motor 91 318is gutted w/chip and k&n air filter and suspension mods. You can still have fun with them on the track. I agree they are harder to find than a 325e/325i. Go mod crazy on those cars,if the motor lets go you can get a 92 to 95 m42 motor and put it in no problem. It has the same block/head/valve cover and header. I say if you find a e30 m42 coupe keep it that way.

Probably would have had the same results if they used an m42, just with less gas $$ spent.
I don't think having to fix the Timing chains/cam gears/tensioner, 180* thrust bearings and profile gaskets when they fail are considered routine maintenance. I doubt a M42 would make it one million miles.
Maybe not in the real world but they would make it a lot farther then the Pile of shit they call an M42.
Mine made it 40k miles out of the factory before the head had to be removed to do a profile gasket.
I have been working in and around bmw's for about 20 years now and it doesnt make a difference if its a 4/6/8 cylinder engine they all grenade at one time or another at no certain mileage. V12's are just a P.O.S thats why i didnt include them in this.

I probably would have stayed OE if my car was a 318is. lowly 4-door 318i and no regrets going 24v, even the fuel consumption is comparable with my taller gearing.
M42 was decent while I had it, no hate. I "raced" a buddy in his 2012 2.5 5-speed Jetta getting on the highway 2nd-3rd gear and astonishingly, we were dead even. really good considering its age, and the Jetta is a decently quick feeling car to get around in. not fast, no.
to me, a big part of the beauty of BMWs is the inline-6 engine, so it's difficult to own the iconic E30 with a 4-banger. same friend with the Jetta had a '90 325is for a short time, and even though it was very much a beater it really felt alot faster than the 318 and I was annoyed by that. I like the M20 though the M42 is of course a more modern and evolved motor.
