Skylines are prob a bit harder to get in US but here they are everywhere. You get an r32 gtr, they are relatively cheap now, put $5k into the engine and get min 300hp at all 4s. That's what I call bang for buck!!

Well I have just done ALL if what you suggested. Big cams, solid lifters, duel springs, m44 valves(thinner stems and lighter) big port job, match porting, Dbilas itb's, 75mm velocity stacks, custom 4into1Exhaust headers. The head has bench flowed 234 hp. Has 11.0:1 JE ,ARP bolts , lightweight pistons, pauter forged light rods, teflon edged crank scraper, total seal rings, bosch blue top injectors, MoTeC m800 ecu, custom air intake, m20 lightened flywheel. Think thats about it. Car weighs 930 kg, has a 5small speed overdrive box with a 4.45:1 e36 318ti small case lsd. I will post results once I have them.
Sounds like a fun motor to me. I find that a lot more cool and clever than just dropping a bigger motor in. It wasn't a cheap build by any stretch of the imagination, but neither is a motor swap so I'd say well done and have fun. 234 hp will move a 318 just fine.
some of us want better than two-valve heads with rocker arms that shit the bed at less RPM than a new Kia can turn, sitting on top of a laughable compression ratio, being held together by a timing belt that looks like a rubber band (bonus points: only failure mode for that rubber band is "catastrophic").
i can get all that AND make my car handle worse? swapping TOMORROW.
I stand up, pull my dick out, and asked my gf to give me some noggin... Well, she starts laughing at me and I freaked out and ran off and locked myself in a bedroom.
Been daily'n an m42 and driven m20 before. Yes, you can tell the difference in HP's.
However, HP is not the sole factor when it comes to driving experience.
M42's are nimbler then m20s. For daily where MPG is a factor...i'd never swap it out.
That extra 5-10MPG that you get in an m42 is well worth the 40HP decrease.
AND on another note, ppl that swap m42's out benefit a good cause.
1. My car value increases.
2. Spare motors are in abundance (cheap), in case i'd FI one day.
