Drive your car for a week without going past 50% throttle.

Then put it to the floor, note the black smoke that puffs out of your exhaust. It just clears out some of the carbon build up.

Because the oil system sends oil into the area between the bearing and journal.

Basically, take a ball bearing and replace the balls with oil. There is no contact between your rotating assembly and the bearings around it. This is why cold start causes most wear, because until the oil gets pumped into the bearings, you will have metal/metal contact.

Another reason why you should NEVER rev and engine on start up. Wait until the oil light goes out at least.

bearings don't touch. that's why you want good oil pressure, and why losing it is bad.

Oil fills the void between the metals, creating a buffer, if you will. When you get metal on metal with bearings, you get a nasty banging noise.

Ever seen a soccer mom in a decade-old mini van realize too late she shouldn't have pulled out in front of you and mash it? That black smoke.

                              All about how it's driven.

I have a 94 Trans Am with 5x,xxx miles on it that I baby. My father bought it brand new, and I have taken it over. I get on it probably once or twice a month in the summer when I have it out, and on the first hard accel it will smoke like a diesel. Just on the first pull,,for about a second, after that nothing. Granted it does run a bit rich, but just goes to show that you do get a build up under easy driving conditions, and once you get some air flowing through, it will clear it out.
