My friend has a US-spec 1995 M3, it is a good car but no e30.
If your are thinking about this "drifting-wise" then keep your e30, your M50 has plenty of power to let you slide around corners.
The e30 is so much smoother in drifting (my opinion) than the e36.Diamond schwarz, BMW E28 518i - M30 swap in progress

If he's your buddy, why not exchange cars for a few days before you each make your final decision? Like an extended test drive.
The E36 is OK. I used to have one, bought new in 2000 (left over '99 model). Kind of boring to drive, but it's good for a daily driver (as long as all the electronics work). Ended up trading it in for an Evo VIII in 2003 and going back to my old E30 for track stuff.
The E30 M3 and E46 M3 have some magic to them. For some reason, I feel zero passion towards the E36 M3 and E92 M3. Don't know whysigpic
