E36 m3 is a better car in every way except for subjective aspects. Make your own decision its not our car.

Learn from his mistake. If you trade you will be the bigger fool. Make sure you get your e30's refretted though or you will have indecisive exhaust notes.

yeah keep it, if you own an e30 its because u like a car that demands your imput and the e36 seems to lose alot of that.

My friend has a US-spec 1995 M3, it is a good car but no e30.
If your are thinking about this "drifting-wise" then keep your e30, your M50 has plenty of power to let you slide around corners.
The e30 is so much smoother in drifting (my opinion) than the e36.

If he's your buddy, why not exchange cars for a few days before you each make your final decision? Like an extended test drive.

The E36 is OK. I used to have one, bought new in 2000 (left over '99 model). Kind of boring to drive, but it's good for a daily driver (as long as all the electronics work). Ended up trading it in for an Evo VIII in 2003 and going back to my old E30 for track stuff.

The E30 M3 and E46 M3 have some magic to them. For some reason, I feel zero passion towards the E36 M3 and E92 M3. Don't know why

you already know my decision (e30) but im also a firm believer in keeping what you build and that having more value than something thats just bought that way. if you want to go faster, get a bigger engine.
