No way 10k. Duble that and you are getting closer.
Anyways... My girl friend and I have had a 2010 135i for about two years now and we have loved it. If you are looking for a fun, and surprisingly fast car get a 135i. The 135i puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. If you are just looking for a nice car thats easier on gas get the 128i.
In the two years we have had out 135i it has had one big problem though. I dont think it is a normal problem as I did a lot of research on it, and I decided it was caused by our dealer doing cost saving maintenance on out car. The coils on these cars tend to burn out as they run ridiculously high power. The dealer replaced one bank of coils, which then caused the ECU to FREAK OUT as it had a miss matched set of coils! This caused a whole lot of other problems like a burned out cat and a few other things.
If you have the money get one. You will not regret it. I think it is probably the funnest modern BMW besides maybe a M Z coupe because of its size and power to weight. With a few miner upgrades (down pipe, pnp tune, intercooler, exhaust) you will easily be faster then a 1M as BMW down tuned 1M so it wouldnt be as much competition for the M3. In fact you will be faster then most M3s, Porsches and quite a few other fast cars out there.
Just love this car.

I know you want a 128... But there isn't much "upgrades" from my research on the 128. The 135 has more upgrades and can get much better power. I don't think the 128 would be worth it unless you are looking for a gas saver. I mean the 135 is same engine as the 335... And the size difference is quite big.
Also now they are making a 135is:) so 320 hp instead of 300... That's the one I would go for.sigpic

Lol yeah. Whats he think the 1M has in it?
I just picked up a 08 135i w/52400m for 20800. I love the car. It will be expensive if you cant work on your own car. Some parts have really come down in price due the issues and having to be replaced so often. The 128 is a slower economical version great for a dd who wants something less expensive and reliable and isnt plagued with all the n54 problems. The 135 is an absolute blast to drive. I love mine. Would i buy it again after owning it? Yes.
Edit: FYI i have found that performane parts for the 135i tend to sometimes run triple what one would pay for a comparable e30 part.Last edited by RGCintha29073; 05-17-2013, 10:10 AM.sigpicComment

I would go for the 128i I don't trust the turbo motors too much expensive stuff to break being direct injection and the 128i is still quick I hate how no new BMW's have LSD's except M cars1989 BMW 325is Lachsilber metallic 5 speed

And aren't they just squeezing the other brake?
There is something to be said for a normally aspirated inline 6. No it won't have the power of the turbo cars but there is probably long term reliability to be considered.
My Mom has a 328 Xi e92 and it's a real nice car. Rocket? No. But still very pleasurable to drive. When she got it she asked me if I liked it. I said yes! She said, "good, caus that's the one you'll get when I die!"

Thanks for the comments. My interest in the 128 vs a 135 is, as others noted, lower cost of purchase and operation, greater simplicity, and probable long-term reliability.1990 Alpine 325iC.Comment

If you are going to keep it log term... And as a BMW enthusiast I don't think you will keep it stock.. Maybe for a few years? But in the end what would you rather own? 135is or 128? It's kinda like you owning a eta.. And looking back saying damn I wish I would of bought the "I" <~ just a comparison but I think you get my point.
But do whatever you feel is the right way to go.
Either way can't go wrong with the 1!sigpic

The diff's are open, you would have to find a sport trac slip or whatever manufacturer that can make a custom gearing. But you are looking at 1k plusComment

Having ridden in this car many times, go with the 135i. It will also be a better car to sell used in the future. More people will be looking for the performance model when going aftermarket.
Have you considered the FR-S? Cheaper than the 128i, faster, lighter (2,700lbs) and LSD stock. I'm pretty certain this car will hold it's value better than a 128i as well. It's essentially a modern day E30, but with sportier intentions.Drive it hard. Maintain it well.
