You can have some "M" parts on a car that isn't an M3--M-tech steering wheel?

M-Tech does not equal ///M. M-Tech is just sport equipment for regular model cars that AREN'T ///M cars (Yes, I know some parts are put on ///M's, but that's not the point). Like E30 M-Tech II verts.

I don't bother because it doesn't matter. I feel most people know they don't have a real M but they may have some parts or whatever that makes them feel their car deserves a special designation. BMW did build M Technics and ///M325, ///M333i, ///M535's and such so there is some validity to their logic. As long as it's not a model specific badge like "M3" or "M5" etc. it's all good, IMO. When I was a teenager, I debadged my 2.7i car and simply put an "///M" in the rear because I wanted to show off and let people know it wasn't an average E30. To an enthusiast, it's obvious it wasn't an M car but back then not many people were into BMW's like they are now so it was almost like being in an elitist fraternity. BMW Motorsport wasn't quite the marketing brand it is today.

I have put an "///M" badge in front of a 325iS with M Technic front spoiler before simply because I had one laying around and I had planned on getting the entire M Tech 2 kit later. I have an affinity to E30's with grill badges, so it just seemed right to me.

My E39 has an M5 rep bumper on it and is currently debadged. I have a few extra rear M badges but I didn't bother to put one on because the car looks cleaner without it. So for me it's something that becomes part of the aesthetics. I have seen some people go overboard with the ///M theme and it just looks tacky. Subtlety is the key.

wasn't it some sort of option to have a ///M logo on the front grill on e30's or something? i feel like i read that somewhere on here.

Years ago (when the e39 was the current 5 series) my buddy and I ended up talking to a guy with a 528 with M5 bumpers, rep wheels, and badge. When asked why he said that yeah, people like us notice and take exception, but 90% of people don't know any better. They know what an M5 is, but can't tell you how it's different off hand. He can show up somewhere, tell women he has an M5, and they fall for it. He can get the desired results for 1/2 the price. To each their own.
