Yes, it is a full on recall. Safety problem. Cars were just cutting off in the middle of the highway.
Friend's ex had it done and there were still software issues persisting even after the recall. Many many trips to dealer = inconvenient.
This is basically what I heard. I had a friend of a friend who worked at BMW and basically said any 335 that came in they just straight assumed it was the fuel pump. Said some were bad out of the box.
total payment from BMW NA based on the number of HPFP
Replacements obtained outside of the recall according to the following schedule:
CBM-SF\SF534508.3
Number of HPFP
Replacements
Total Payment
1 $50
2 $100
3 $200
4 $300
5 $400 (capped thereafter)
Yeah, all that and they will always have the carbon issue every like 30k miles. Drop engine out, take off intake mani, walnut blast the valves, put it all back together, with new hardware of course because it's all aluminum nuts and bolts for Efficient Dynamics and has to be replaced each use.
Waterpump is electric and costs over $500 and you have to use new hardware.
...and it's reliability track record is less than stellar.
Call me bias, but the last good, in terms of reliability and ease of repair, engine BMW made was the M54.

Dude....no. 335i is just a name and has nothing to do with engine displacement.
WTFBBQ no
the 5 is from the fake .5 liter displacement that the turbos give. the actual engine is a 3L
so they call it a 335i
the NA version would be 330i
and the detuned NA is a 328i
all are the same size engine.
Nowhere on the 335 does it say 3.5, lol. They have just resorted to calling them whatever the marketing department decides... 328i 3.0 NA, 335i 3.0 turbo, 540i 4.4 NA, 545i 4.4 NA, 550i 4.4 turbo...
They have "massaged" the naming convention but nowhere on the car does it say 3.5 liters... They would get sued
The 335 is because it theoretically makes the same power a N/A 3.5L engine in that trim would make.
Same deal with the e23 745i. It was a 3.4L with a turbo. Put out theoretically the same power as a N/A 4.5l engine in that trim would have put down.
They have done this before guys. Not big news.
e36/46 323is are really 2.5l. 328is are 2.8l. Why didn't they call it a 325i? Because why pay more for a 328i when a 325 is so close? Marketing. Make it look more superior.
just wait until your warranty expires and you can start replacing each crappy made electrical component 1 after another, as well as the shitty ass quality of the motors in them-that will eat up a few sets of injectors, plugs, carbon up like a mofo, eat the cam/vanos seals (which will lead to new cam trays) as well as just fall apart in the interior.
yeah, they are fun to drive at work, but NO, I will never give up my hard earned cash for one of em. esp. a 5 y/o one..........
and BTW, you do not need to disassemble the motor to blast the valves.
are your waste gates rattling like a bitch at idle yet? no fear, they will start to if not already- and to fix that you need 2 NEW turbos.
The N55 is not any better of a motor IMO, has the same problems too.
