I don't live in a dorm or anything (bit too old for that!) plus I work every morning before class, so I pretty much need my car. If you're going to live on campus, it's probably better in the long run to leave the car at home. I know I wouldn't want a bunch of idiot college kids who can't drive trying to park next to me!

This has been a debate for me here at school for some time now. I don't know whether it is worth it to drop the insurance on my car, and leave it at home in the garage, or keep it at school. I would save a LOT of money if I left it at home.
At my school (Mars Hill College), freshmen get the shaft on parking, so I have to park in lots that are small and cramped with spaces. I am constantly worrying about getting a door dent/scratch or having someone leave a little love-tap on my Euro bumper moldings.
Also, for me, the only place to wash my car is at one of those 'pressure wash' DIY places, which suck, and don't clean the car for shit.
Another thing that sucks is that I don't have the facilities or tools to work on my car at school. Any time I want to make adjustments or do any sort of maitanence, I have to make the 2hr drive home....which I have to do in a couple weeks, because my brakes are toasted.
HOWEVER...I think I would go insane without my car for long periods of time. Sometimes after difficult class or if I need to blow off steam....a 275horse E30 does the trick. Furthermore, the backroads around here are first-class, and really help me build my experience, since there isn't much of an auto-xing scene around here.
At my school, we don't have to pay for parking stickers though, so that's not a worry.
It's a personal preference though. Like I said, for me, I need to have my car sometimes.

If you go through with purchasing a house, keep it. If you're school is anything like UNH where housing and parking is a premium, you'll make your investment back in no time.
Average rent here for a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, kitchen/living room appt is $1200-1500 a month.
You really cant go wrong with buying and renting college housing.Below the radar...

this is my third year at Purdue, I wasn't allowed to have a car here the first year and I've had one here both years after that. It's much nicer to have the car even though parking can be a pain especially since I live right across the street from both stadiums and I get kicked out of my parking lot for every home game. It's worth it for the ability to go out to eat, get groceries, etc. whenever you want.

Keep it, rent it? Hmmm nothing like a good source of money flowing in month.
$1200
I definately think that it would be a great plan to save on housing, and do everything possible to be in the black leaving college. (And put me on my way to having my OWN house, and a 1999 911 C2 Aero Coupe, black over black...... :P )
But thanks for your words Chris. Freshmen have to stay in dorms, but I will have this all planned out hopefully by Soph. year.

IM a freshman at St. Lawrence University in Upstate NY. The nearest airport is almost two hours away and its a 7 hour drive home. It would actually save me time to drive to and from my house here rather than pay a couple hundred bucks everytime I need to go back. Plus I dont have to worry about shipping things etc. Also its really nice to be able to go anywhere, anytime. My college is out in the farmlands of NY so there isnt much around. Its nice having the pathfinder to be able to drive the two hours up to Montreal on a sat or be able to just run and get groceries. The only thing for me is that this is snow country. Being just a lil east of the great lakes we get a couple inches a day, sometimes more. Thats doing a number on my pathfinder already, and Im only halfway through my first of four winters. When I do get y e30 I think Id only pay for insurance on it half a year and then use the pathfinder the other half. Its damn well worth it to have a car, but thats just my opinion

Freshman year I kept my car in an off campus guest parking lot and didn't really use it except to go home. I'd say hitch rides with friends and stuff for the first year - you'll get used to getting around other ways and stuff like that.
Now though, I enjoy the car far too much to not have it. I pay $140 a year to park it on campus (I live in an off campus apt) and would miss it like crazy if I couldn't drive it.

Steve, I've only been hearing freshmen have to stay in residences, but I checked their website, and your right. It's good to know the facts, thanks. :)
