These factory sleepers are awesome. They're so charmingly ugly.

Had one. '92, 5 speed, from 37K to 110K, white / tan just like that one.
As others have noted, great engine surrounded by complete crap. Had at least one 4-figure repair bill per year. It left me stranded twice. Massive squeaks and rattles. Failed A/C in July. And on and on. Most embarrassing car I've ever owned (for perspective, I also had owned a turquoise '60 Rambler...that's how embarrassing the SHO was).
Engine feels like an M20 on steroids: comes on strong at 4K, and stays strong right up to 7K.
You couldn't pay me to take one.

The V8s only came with automatics, and the 89 5 speed was actually a bit faster. Plus, that was the horrid "bubble" generation.
The V6 was completely built by yamaha, it was the v8 that had just Yamaha heads. Im not sure it was really superior, it certainly wasn't going by sales..Last edited by nando; 11-22-2013, 08:15 PM.

True
The Yamaha pressed the cam sprockets on to the cam shafts instead of bolting them to shave rotational mass. This led to the cams coming off the sprockets and interference taking it's toll. Welding was the solution.
If I could find a RWD trans that would fit or an adapter plate, I would totally be balls first into the swap. All forged aluminium V8 that can hit 8000rpm without a sweat. They were tested and stressed at over 8500 and so were the V6's. Get some new springs and regrind the quad cams and you'll have a sick ass NA V8.
