why? that's one option...if I get a m30 engine sure I will drop a nice turbo there too..

The turbo worth in a m20 if don't want to make sawp or waste alot of money trying to runn your m20 faster with mods. The turbo worth the price for the power that give you...still with all the mods in N.A M20 won't make enough power as the M20 Turbo and yet you will probably spend more money in N.A. parts..

Turbo charging is the cheapest way to get serious power. And as we all know serious power = serious speed. M20 turbos will stick with a new vette, not beat one but it will hold one. Whereas the Vette owner paid $35k + for his car. You piad Right @ $5k for your e30 and you rebuilt your motor and strapped on a turbo with tuning for $3,500. I rest my case.

Why not? The M20 is already in the car and other M20's can be obtained for very low cost if anything should happen.

That is basically the mentality of the Honda crowd around here (read: Honda racers, not ricers).

A couple guys here have like 2-3 motors in thier basements or garages just in case they pop thiers. Then on thier spare time the tweak the standby motors to optimize what they have learned from running the turbo.

Pop one, jsut drop in another and rebuild the popped one.
              Im now E30less.

Depends on what you want to use it for and your driving habits.

As an occassionally driven car I'd like a wicked 2.7 m20 turbo.

M30 I'd leave in the e28s and e34s cos that's where they belong. M50,S38 and S50 variants are a different story...

In my opinion, the M30 is just too heavy for the e30 chassis.
Add in a turbo and intercooler and you'll have understeer out the bejeezus.

Take a look at Matt's turbo 2.8. Thats all the reason I need to do a turbo M20.

Screw an M20 with a turbo. If I'm gonna go through all the hassle of fabbing something like that, I'll start with an m30. The grunt of a 3.5 M30 will allow you to run a much bigger turbo, and get some good power out of it. You also can source OEM turbo parts, manifolds and other goodies, a lot nicer solution than most of the hackjob m20 turbo setups I've seen.

As for the weight balance, who cares? You'd have a lot more grunt out back, so you can make the rear end rotate just fine.

after owning my E28 with an M30, and going through the rebuild right now with a Euro M30, I would totally turbo an M30 and drop it in an E30. it will SMOKE an M20 Turbo, just because of the sheer mass the motor has and the heat it can pack. This engine is so potent. My 5er is fast with its 3200+ lb weight chassis and this motor in it. I can't wait to have an additional 50hp and a little more torque, this car will be a screamer. Just imagine making twice the output with a turbo running 12+psi on it, and the thing is literally bulletproof... makes an M20 look weak in comparison.

turbos seem nice on paper but the whole reason I like bmw's is the sweet sweet sound and pure driving pleasure I can get from a N/A BMW straight 6. Its been their namesake for years and noone makes em better. Plus most of the turbo m20's out there are pieced together from this and that and look like a bitch to repair and just askin for trouble. Id take stu's motor over a turbo anything any day of the week, even if it makes me save up a lil longer. Sorry boys but its game set match for the N/A
