    m30 vs 24v swap

I've been perusing the project forum and I see that almost everyone doing a swap is going for m5x/s5x. Why is there no love for the m30 it seems like a good solid swap, but no one seems to be doing it? I really wanna build a boosted m30 one day,but seems like no one here on r3v does it and that makes me wonder why.

Weight. The M30 is a tank for the horsepower it doesn't make. The M5x makes
more power and weighs less, and comes with a better injection system.

But it's still a great motor, for all that.

now, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves

      I'd take a M30B35 swap over a M50 any day!

The weight thing is a myth if you're talking any of the iron block M5x engines. The weight difference between an iron block M50 & an M30 is only 8kg (17lbs).

When I went from an M20 with AC to an M30 with no AC in "position 3", there was negligible difference in handling... if anything the extra weight helped settle the front end in situations where with the M20 upfront the car would be a bit unsettled with my Eibachs / Bilstein Sports.

For me, the period correctness of the M30 was what I liked about the swap + the torque makes the M30 effortless to drive & the engine looks like it's meant to be there.

The M5x swap requires less parts & the engines are now in wrecking yards at an ever increasing rate (remember that the M30 went out of production in the early 90's, vs. 2006 for the M54!!) which would explain their rise in popularity in recent years.

I love how people talk like they know something. 40lbs over an m20...damn that is so much weight!

M50 is slower down bottom and up top. Two members have ridden in my b35 swap that had an m52 and a m60b30. Both said how much quicker the m30 makes power.

Period correct, gobs of bottom end and pulls like a train with no dead spots till you bounce revlimiter. Not to mention the m30 is the perfect engine for big numbers with boost.

I went from m20 to m30 and gained almost no weight with a stripped down b35. Only drawback is the swap is more extensively fabrication vs a bolt in m50. That is why most swap the m50 based block.

          The m30 is bulletproof.

Absolutely. I have ridden in an M30B35 swapped E30 and it was a riot. I was contemplating Ford 302/5.0's for a while but that experience has given me doubts about a V8.

              ^^^

The gf thought i was nuts when i bought my e28 with 240k on it. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit, shes just getting started.

Fuel economy sucked in that thing though. My e39 touring gets much better fuel economy than the e28 did.

You know what bothers me the most? Kids that pull junkyard engines and swap it with zero matinance. Then slap 2-3k on top and sell it to noobs. It does not matter what engine you swap. It is the level that is taken on care. I respect any swap(within reason) that has the correct approach. Why waste time putting something in that is just scrubbed down on the outside?

M20 vs m42 m30 vs m50/s50 based vs m60. These have all been beaten to death on what one is better or what one is the smarter swap for the money.

Do whatever engine you want, but do it right.

24v is the one you bring home to meet your mother.

                  M30 is not.

Oh, and don't bother with a (american) M30 B34 unless you are boosting, B35 is one.

Well I have pretty good access yo b35s which I always thought were beasts, haven't looked to much into m5x prices or accessibility. I always heard m30s were crazy heavy and would kill your handling.

If you consider hammering the firewall extensive fabricaton. My m30b35 fit like a glove in my engine bay. I used the M20b25 harness so there was no wiring to deal with. I think its the easiest swap there is and more fun to drive then an m5x

                      Agreed the M30 is tank.

This is a myth and just not true as mentioned above. M30 and M50/S50 variants are effectively the same weight.

Haven't added up all the costs, but they'd come out to being pretty close in price I think. And honestly I don't mind spending an extra few hundred dollars if it allows me to have a better, and more fun engine. I think I'm pretty sold on the m30.
