1/8" steel is perfect for a workbench, too bad I couldn't take it with me when I moved. Even that was HEAVY as hell. Anything less will dent when beat on and makes dealing with rolly things kind of annoying. A 3x8 sheet also won't be cheap, but it sure is awesome especially when you're welding.

I use a spare e30 trunk lid supported on one side by my tool chest and on the other by 4 tires stacked on each other. My air compressor and shop vac fit underneath nicely.
It's got the nice rounded edge to lean against. I keep all loose sockets on a towel or a magnetic pan though because otherwise they can roll off.1991 318is sold!
