Well I did (potentially). I haven't paid for it yet. I just talked to the shop about 20 min ago. Here is where I am at.
    Mine:
    6 ex valves
    3 in valves
    3 rocker arms
    12 guide rods
    Valve job
    Stem seals
    Resurface

    Replacement head:
    6 guide rods
    Cam
    10 rocker arms
    Stem seals
    Valve job
    Resurface

They can use my cam if I decide to fix the new head...

    So ya... screwed either way

We'll if you need it ASAP and have to get the new head shipped it looks like it'd be more advantageous to use the old one.

      Which shop?

New head is here... I took them both to Tachyon for inspection. Here are pics of the replacement head:

Pitting on lobes plus the chroming is lower than the outside edges so it fairly worn.

One rocker is from my car one from new head. You can see the top one has a smooth surface where it hits the cam the other has a dip

It'd 27 years old and like 5 owners... I'm certain it's probably had like 30 different oils ran through it

Upon further inspection... look what I found

                  Here its off the car

The most impressive part is it separated then wrapped the gears around itself.

                  Here is my belt

All I can find on that gear is its the "intermediate shaft gear" what does it do?

                    That's..... Strange.

The intermediate shaft is used for giving the timing belt a good angle for the camshaft and it also drives the distributor on older M20's. Not yours though. It also drives the oil pump IIRC. It's been ages since I've torn an M20 apart.

                    Well there's your problem!

Yes - intermediate shaft sprocket failure. I've never heard of one of the sprockets failing before, but the intermediate shafts themselves can fail as they run in bearings that are milled into the block.

Take the sprocket off and see whether you can turn the shaft, you might need to investigate the oil pump etc. to work out whether the sprocket failed, or the shaft jammed (causing the sprocket to fail).

On motronic cars it drives the oil pump as suggested.

On L-Jet cars, it drives both the distributor & oil pump.
