Ok gentleman question for you I am dropping off my head at the machine shop to have it leveled but I know I need to replace the head bolts but what about the thick washers? BMW wants $4 per washer...

If they aren't warped and terrible looking reuse them. Or replace the ones that are.

If you've warped or mangled one of those washers you're doing something wrong!

When you get the head back lap the valves and replace the valve stem seals. Will take probably 2 hours, and you'll have a brand new head.

The machine shop just came back and said that the valves are all leaking heavily and will need a valve job they say that they would want to take it apart to get a better estimate if I need valve stem seals and stuff

Can any of the work to be done by me if so how difficult is it?

some of the assembly but it's so easy, unless they're raping you on labor I'd just let them do it.

you should be doing new stem seals regardless. Just have em do it.

Well I guess what it boils down to is it better to buy the replacement head at $200 and have the valve job and valve stem seals replaced or should I fix mine? Replace a couple rockers and valves do stem seals and valve job

I'd rent a valve spring compressor and take all the valves out, stick the end in a drill and spin them (check for any wobbling/bent valves) then lap the good ones back in their original home and test for leakage (back fill the valve port with brake parts cleaner).

Considering this is your DD, I'd go replacement head (if known to be from a good running engine) and have the shop go over it and ensure it's all good.

Far cheaper and less downtime than fixing your old one

well i got the quote for my head... $700... 9 bent valves replaces plus guides, and stem seals and rocker arms... I feel like i could drop in a whole new m20 for that...

they are checking out the replacement head now.

What machine shop did you take it too? resurfacing doesn't take long at all. Usually the same day if you get it in there in the AM depending on how busy they are.

I think you should get a used one and refresh that one and slap it on. That's the safe bet I'd sy
