Same thing happened to me in my wrecked e30. The tire started shaking. I emergency pulled into a parking lot, right as I did my wheel flew off and I hopped out of my car and chased after it. Wheel bolts were snapped clean in half.

I would take off the rotor (need to remove the caliper and bracket) and inspect the threads in your hub. If they're damaged your lugs will work themselves loose again.

The lesson: always put a dash of nail polish on the side of the each lug nuts, this way if the nail polish is damaged, then you would know that someone screwed with one of your right or left nuts. That's chuuch.

Nail polish? Ever heard of torque seal?

This happened to me once in my old bronco. Scary shit. Walked for about a mile picking up my stranded lug nuts in the street.. Good thing you're ok

I got kinda lucky last week. I noticed I was missing a lug when I was half way home so I just made sure the rest were tight but a couple days later, two of the three remaining snapped in half and the wheel started wobbling around but I could only put one lug in due to half of the other lugs being in.

I drove it slowly, with two lugs, to my friend's house and was able to get it fixed the next day.

I heard a growling noise after just having replaced the rear tires on my 911. Got out to check and after another block or 2 it got so bad I had to stop. Porsche road side assistance was giving me a song and dance when my daughter pointed to a lug bolt just sitting in the rim. Seems the tire numb nuts didn't tighten them and Porsche did not include a spare with these cars so no lug wrench.

I actually pulled in to a nearby Volvo dealer to bum one...and gave them a good laugh at "those German cars"

wheel, and that loosened the bolts- then they did the rest on their own.

Watched it happen to a Pro3 car at PR last summer- a front- runner who doesn't
change his own wheels, even...

Remember the first time I put spacers on the rear and my rear bottlecap flew off into the forest on an old abandoned road.

Had to do the same exact thing. Jacked the car up by the fender to get the wheel under the rear hub to hold the car high enough to get to the rear jack point; then moved the jack to the jack point to mount the spare

Almost had the rear passenger side wheel come off if I didn't catch the backed out bolts in time! Had this strange clunk at low speeds thought nothing of it cause my rear shock mounts are already gone to crap and same with the all the bushings back there. Jacked it up and nothing checked the diff nothing. Luckily I decided to go around and re-torque all the lugs.

looks like the screw that holds the rotor on isn't all the way in, which means that you couldn't get the wheel flush with the hub, therefore you could never get the lug nuts torqued properly.

well, thats my theory.

as for wheels falling off, i've had a close call before. I had just done a bunch of work and was excited to test drive the e30 and forgot to torque the wheels on the ground. so i set off with them just snug from being on jack stands. I made around the block and thought i messed up something real bad because of the terrible wobble, it's a good thing i decided to check the wheels!

hmm I'll look into that! it definitely sounds possible just not sure if that locking pin is popping out due to the loss of wheel and the obvious damage it did the the inside of the bottle cap

lol, fo realz. Someone tried to steal my wheels, but probably gave up half way 'cuz one of them came off the 405 fwy while I was omw to work at 5am doing 80mph fuuh lol.

It wasn't easy keeping that car straight, but I got skills and they're multiplying haha shiieeet.

The damage: replaced entire rear left assembly.

The lesson: always put a dash of nail polish on the side of the each lug nuts, this way if the nail polish is damaged, then you would know that someone screwed with one of your right or left nuts. That's chuuch.

That is both the dumbest and coolest post I've seen on r3v today.

Holy shit man, how long have you had this car? Maybe someone tried to steal your wheels?
My buddy had this very thing happen too but, with a bit more damage to his rotor and control arm.

Best of luck to you, and I would suggest re-torquing your lug nuts whenever possible.
