Hey guise, cars should only be valued based on their stock horsepower and performance!
Here are some great examples of this:

anyone notice all the haters are generally new to the forum. not that i have a way higher post count or anything but its still worth noticing.
it makes me fear for the future of the e30 and their new owners. No one drives the car for the raw true driver and car experience anymore. eventually it will be filled with kids who wish they drove a faster more modern car but instead have an e30... sounds a lot like the honda scene these days.Comment

There are a lot of young people that are familiar with the E30 M3 from mags, video games, etc but if you weren't around in the 80's early 90's I can see how someone would question why are going for the kind of money they are today. When I was a kid, I couldn't afford one so I built a stroker M20 2.7i figuring that's what the M3 should have been anyway instead of the S14. In hindsight, it was a silly thing to say. Paul Rosche knew what he was doing and the M3 has the track record to prove it."I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

Totally agreed. I can understand wanting to swap a car that doesn't have a great engine to begin with (ie, M20), but not the S14. Seems like some people (I used to be one of them) don't understand that it's not about all out power, but rather it's about balance... absolutely no point in a car that has 500hp, but can't put it down. And of course... it's far more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow... not that the M3 is slow, if you know how to drive it.
But what I really don't understand is why people choose to swap (and ruin) an M3 which had pretty limited production numbers, when they could just as easily swap a non-M E30 which they made >2mil of. Fortunately, I think the going price of M3s now will put an end to that, for the most part.Comment

Because they can sell the s14 and break even on the swap and it's still an m3 ...or is it? The answer depends on how significant of a role you believe the s14 played when the car was winning all those races."I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

My s14 has cams light head work exhaust an a chip and I raced my friends with his e30 m3 s52 and it was barely faster. The s14 doesn't feel as fast because it doesn't have torque and push you back in your seat like a s52 but there pretty quick with minor mods.Comment

That's true. And that's probably the biggest reason I'll never own an E30 M3 - they're just too expensive, both to buy, and maintain. But to me, the S14 makes the M3 what it is. Without it, it's just another E30 with a body kit, IMO.Comment

^i think a lot of engines were swapped when you could pick up a nice m3 for under say 10k. Then the owner found out it was going to almost cost as much to do a proper rebuild of the s14, if they could even find someone who was truly qualified. That ruined the originality of the car as well as drove up the price of unmolested cars. Now with the prices where they are the only people who can afford the car, will be able to properly maintain it.
It's a lot like the e39 m5. If you couldn't afford to but one new, you prob couldn't afford to properly maintain it picking it up used.Comment

It doesn't matter what car you own, you will always end up with tons of BS talk as long as there are people out there that aren't able to afford it. Ask anyone that owns a Lamborghini Miura...which was a horrible car back in it's day :DComment
