Your rants are worth nothing without calling out the party in question. Then you need to allow them to defend themselves as it may have been less than the total backstab you make it out to be.

Let's not forget that he who is first to hand the seller a wad of cash gets the car, especially one that has been up for sale for a freaking year!

I am not siding with anyone, if you were there to grab it with cash in hand...you would be posting your BMW instead of complaining someone else snatched it up.
I'm inclined to lean more toward this perspective. Yeah, it sucks you lost out, and I feel for you, but it might be a hard-learned lesson on keeping things on the down-low until it's a sure thing.

Dibs doesn't mean shit after about 5th grade. Cash is king. And yes, Karma is a bitch.

Speaking as someone who has had one or two deals snaked from under me, I feel your pain. Consider it a lesson learned. Karma is indeed a bitch and she don't forget nothing!

I'm not going to say OP or unnamed other guy did anything right or wrong in this deal, but I definitely empathize with the OP and always hate to see an interesting car get parted/crushed for a quick buck when it could have been revived and used. But maybe I'm biased since that's my business.

There is nobody to call out but myself for running my mouth. Its not like a crime was committed. The 2 people involved know who they are because I told them I was going to post about it on here and if they had something to say I would put all the emails and pms up. This isn't about dibs. I offered a deposit. The seller refused because he wanted to be able to call up his little part hawk buddy and say after a year of them haggling hey man I got a guy coming to buy this tmrw so if you don't want to lose it just give close to what he's offering. Now if I don't contact the buyer and rub in his face hey yo know that car he won't sell you well I'm buying it to restore. So he called his little buddy like man I can't miss the chance to part that out. So he gave him a bro deal. The point was to talk about all 3 angles of the deal. I'm not saying anybody violated anything other than an unwritten code amongst certain people who see life from the everyman perspective. I would have offered more than the list price. The point is that I got used, I'm butt hurt, I vented. Its not to say hey look at what this guy did dont ever buy from them. Im just telling a tale about "this one time". Based on the feedback I can see the people who I would associate with and those I wouldnt. Usually people with similar opinions stick together. So the people who would do the exact same thing see it one way and the the people who see it from my perspective see it similar. Its just opinion and hyperbole. I got jobbed and way worse is happening in the world its no big deal.

Honestly if it wasn't meant to be then there's nothing that could have been done. Me and a bunch of my e30 buddies have all lost out on one thing/deal or another but in the end we've all come up and better than we would have before. So like I said, lesson learned and keep chugging. That karma got long term memory man...believe me I know.

Agreed. But the issue here for me is that (from what I gather anyway) the buyer acted like he was OPs buddy, up until OP mentioned the car, at which point he went behind his back and bought it out from under him. Speaks to his character, or lack thereof, IMO.

Aside from that little detail, sounds like business as usual, albeit a little shady on the seller's part too.

Good lesson on knowing when to keep your mouth shut though.

Exactly what happened. Like oh when it was general questions all good. When I said that car he won't sell you, I'm buying it. It was let me see the car. Silence. Car gone. I have the cash. We arranged a time place and the notary, while I was at the bank getting the cash he was calling his buddy giving him one last shot. I get home I get an email......I got bad news someone test drove the car YESTERDAY and made me a generous offer I'm inclined to accept I hope you didn't sell your e30 yet. This is after 10+ emails within 3 hours of the bad news email going over the place to meet, how we would do the notary all that. Thats why I said the post. This wasnt me dicking around. I saw the car Saturday had cash in hand Tuesday and a meeting place arranged at 2pm next day. This is normal shitty craigslist everyday games that I figured would be above people well known in the community. Im learning the lesson. Im not naive lets not be silly. Not mention for the 5th time I offered a deposit and to purchase the car full amount sight unseen. The person who did buy it has only seen pictures also. Not like some guy showed up at the sellers house in the 3 hrs I was at the bank and doing the notary. It was for sale for a year at lower prices than it sold. No "local" guy bought anything. Its quite simple really. The person who owned the e23 parts out e30s and the person who bought the e23 is the m30 "boost wizard" and parts out m106s and m30s and does custom work. Hmm still not sure whats going on. Its two people who are parts hounds. They are their own breed. So in the end my karma got me. That means it will get someone else now.

there's a lot of parts' cars that deserve to be saved,
but then again; that statement goes both ways. :D

I had a car lined up to buy once I sold my car and I took less than I could of so I could go buy the car I wanted. Well over the past few days I have been talking with some extremely well known people on this site and a few others about this car I was going to buy and what I could do with it. So one of these people asked to see the craigslist ad about the car. So as of last night I had a deal to buy this car. Well I saw these said popular members were posting about having parts off a car that was my exact car I was going to buy. So I took the cash this morning for my car and told the guy I would be buying it and he said it was good to go. So a few minutes ago I get an email from the guy saying that someone last night made offer he couldn't refuse. He told me who it was and its the member I was asking about my car. So they took my deal and went and undercut it. Then I find out they paid 200 less than we agreed and they are going to part the car and I was going to full restore it. I realize I sound like a whining 12 year old in a dog eats dog world but is this the type of people that are super popular members here? I was going to buy the car and then come to them for 5 grand in upgrades instead they buy the car so they can part it out and put a premium on the parts.
Im amazed considering all the great things I heard about this person. It is what it is. So now I got a bunch of money and no car. And the car I wanted was imported from Europe in 1984. Im not gonna walk down the street and find one. What a day what a day. I hope the greedy bastard gets top dollar for all those parts.

To avoid being asked to say who it is ill just say this. They know who they are I can show the pm's on mye28. Im a grown man though and believe in karma. East of the Mississippi, North of Mason Dixon, and West of the hills of PA. You can figure it out. I just wanted to get this off my chest because I have met like 30 super cool friendly people just in a month on here. So its not all bad.
So, did you have a deposit on this vehicle that the seller reneged on?

Because otherwise, it sounds like he sold it to the first person that brought him the money. Plans and good intentions are wonderful, but don't mean a lot to me compared to cash in hand.

Normally this could apply. What you meant to say in this instance is. Part one car to MAKE MONEY. MONEY. MONEY. MONEY. need more MONEY. We all know cars are worth more in parts. People buy brand new subaru sti just to part them. Thats not the point here. The seller repeatedly said he wanted it to go to a good home and not let his buddy part it out. Until I ran my mouth like ya I'm getting that car he wouldn't let you part out. So obviously they had some kind of talk and arrangement because they both are parters. This is no different than living in Detroit. While you are sleeping the thieves go around and steal your cat converters. Then they go sell them to the corner mechanic. Then you wake up in the morning and go to drive and your cats are missing so you drive to the corner shop and say man I need a cat for my 95 Ford. The shop owner says" its your lucky day I just happen to have the exact cat you need", as in you are about to pay him to reinstall your very own cat that got stolen in the middle of the night. Well how nice and convenient. This is the same. Instead of me buying the whole car and restoring it. Now I have to find a even shittier car and then go this person to buy all the parts I need to upgrade it because they round up every m106 and 745 eurocentric parts out there. Then I want to go bigger on my setup with the turbo. Who's the first person everyone will say to call to boost an M30? Hope you understand, and if not where a helmet when riding your high horse because its a long fall.

I guess I should have contacted the Securities and Exchange Commision because this is Wall Street. Or let all these people who worship at the feet of the boost god know that the reason they have a monopoly on parts is this right here. And its not like the person doesn't charge absolute top dollar no room to negotiate on all prices. This isn't let me get all these parts so the community can get them. Its about the bottom line. They have a BUSINESS to run. Im trying to get high on revs. Totally different mindset. Normally I am a wolf amongst sheep so when I come here I come here to be a part of a group who enjoy the same thing. I can guarantee this happens to hundreds of people on here they just accept it as normal BUSINESS practice. Im about ethics not money.

Ok, so you got the shaft, but this is real life. There is not much ethic in the real world anymore. You have to protect yourself when doing business with someone that you have never met even if that person appears to be honest on an online forum. You don't know his relationship with the other buyer. It could be that they are buddies and buddies will come first even if it would mean a few hundred dollars less.
