teching a POS car like that, even after repair... good fucking luck.
just an important question? have you ever tracked? instructors have s50s, and some not even roll cages. you sound like uber hardcore
I am not going to do an s50 now, thats way down the line but I am going to start doing other things like suspension and other things to the vert. I would just keep the vert a show car only kinda project if I could get a beat up POS and bring it back from the dead. Is it bad that I want to have fun with my car? I know its a vert but I can make it fast and track worthy.

You are not looking at E30 prices for parts here ie. rebuild S14 engine $7000 to $12,000 & that's doing a lot of the grunt work yourself- E30M3 parts are a lot more expensive, used or new - the ONLY part that will interchange with the E30 is the hood!! Do a search for the "$15,000 rule" on S14.net for a real eye opener.
Not trying to rain on your parade, just being realistic - do your homework & become an educated buyer - it will put a permanent smile on you face, even with empty pockets!!

My only comment would be that the $15K rule is probably closer to $17-$18K now.sigpic

I just bought a high mileage 1990, in perfect mechanical shape with a rebuilt 2.3, all new bushings, gaskets no rust and whatnot for 5.5K , but it needs paint, interior , wheel, tires and exhaust and that is just to get it decent, I fully expect about 15-18K all said and done, and I think I stole the car for 5.5k, I would offer 3.5K and go from there

^I can autox it though right? I have seen some verts on this site that are autoxing. I would only do it maybe twice a year so I am not planning trying to go full race with it.Last edited by Mastrcruse; 04-28-2006, 02:05 PM.

I understand that the es would be better. Its my brothers car right now and we were talking about race prepping it. This car looked like a good idea but for how much I would put into it, I could make the vert or es pretty badass. He hasn't called me today so I don't know what the price he might ask for it but if anyone wants a project its on 5th ave. in C'bus. Thanks for the help and keep commenting if you would like.

honestly dude, fuck fuh raze prep. it's a lot more important to have a well maintained car at the track. and at auto-x.
i have GCs, camber plates, fuh raze adjustable urethane rear bushings, THR eyeballs, 4.10 diff, and some other hardcore shit.
if i could go back (or change cars), i'd have a 318is with H&R sports and konis, and camber plates, stock diff, stock new bushings all around, and some good rubber on basketweaves or 15x7 wheels. really.
don't full on mod before you auto-x or track the first time. everyone wants to and thinks they should, but no. Scott314 just did his first DE with nothing more than upgraded pads and fresh brake fluid (ATE SuperBlue).

20 years playing at the track here.
You'll learn more if you go with a stock car. You'll understand the feedback the car is giving you easier. You have to decide if you are going to the track to improve your skills, or as an engineering excercise to put performance parts on a car to see how the improvements stack up. Problem is, until you build your own driving skills, you won't really be able to evaluate performance upgrades.
As for that E30 M3. That is a perfect candidate to be converted to a full blown race car... but not by you. No offense. That car is good for the shell only. A perfect candidate to be totally stripped, and rebuilt into a proper race car. It is not worth much in its current condition.
An E30 M3 is not really that great of a car for Auto-x because it does not have all that much low end torque. It is tossable, but is a better track car where it can really let the RPMs wind out.
Because of the insurance that many track events (and now auto-x events) must carry, the policies are restricting convertibles, and the trend is to restrict them further, and I see them being fully banned in the near future. I wouldn't sink money into a 'vert for a track car. Check with your local Auto-x group to see what they think the future is for cabrios. It can't be good.Lance Richert '88 M3, #35 PRO3, i3 etc.
