As time went on, the factory developed the car each year, making it faster, more comfortable, and capable of handling at higher speeds.
You don’t want this. You want the trickiest, most dangerous, oldest model you can find. Only then can you prove to the world that you’re a man.

there was a thread on bf.c track section about how its funny BMWCCA will not allow Convertibles at DEs but include them for CR, so that in order to get up to that point, drivers would have to use NASA or SCAA...

Hmmm!
I go with $2-3000. An M3 is a car that will appreciate if original and in excellent condition. If the motor's good you're looking at $3-4000 in body work and paint. Probably $2-3000 in body parts - they'll have to be new. The tires are rotten and who knows about small stuff that adds up like crazy. Buy it for $2-3000 and spend $12-14,000 and you'll have $15-20,000 car.
Please don't make a track rat out of it. It should be restored. The stuff that makes an M3 handle can be added to a beater as aftermarket.

I guess it depends on if someone were going to restore the car paying retail prices, or if they were going to do a lot of the work themselves, and had access to parts at wholesale prices. Paying retail for labor would kill the project. There are still enough reasonable running M3s out there to make me want to stay away from this shell. If it sits in a barn for another 10 years, and x-amount of M3s in the meantime are used up, then it will make more economic sense to restore it.
That being said, there is nothing sensical about owning an E30 M3. They make no practical sense! That's why I'm the 3rd and 5th owner of mine!Lance Richert '88 M3, #35 PRO3, i3 etc.
