This 100%. I personally have been looking for one forever and it seems like the only way to get one that's nearly rust free is to search down south somewhere. I'd imagine there are other people in Newfoundland looking to find one as well as there's only two here across the whole province.

        Same shop, different vehicle.

Nevermind the 1 year time frame to complete the car ;)

Hate to tell you, but repairs do not add value to a car, they keep it from being worth nothing.

If a perfect (read: good) e30, with good paint, no rust, 100% mechanical upkeep... is worth 5k. Then everything else goes down from there. A new/rebuilt engine/tranny and 'tasteful' mods could go up from there. We see 10k e30s.... but we also see $500 e30s..... Why is one worth 20x more than the other?

When I am looking at any car I always ask myself and the PO 'what needs to be replaced/fixed in the next year'? The longer that list the lower the price especially if it is maintenance that should have been done by the PO.

Keep the e30 and get a cheap bike + gear.

I prefer hood rat sh*t myself since it saves thousands on body work and paint. I don't think I could pay thousands for body work and paint just like I couldn't pay thousands for a suit and a pair of pants. All go and rattlecan show. I prefer the fun drive part to the shiny part of vehicle ownership, much to the dismay of all but the most junkyard of ladies. I wouldn't have it any other way.

with E30s people don't notice bodywork anyway. The paint is failing on my roof but the only person who notices is me..

No, I dont' care for the resell amount, as I know it's not worth much on the market even if it's got a new paint job. I'm just more concerned with rust and it's ill effects on the structural integrity of the machine.

Rust has to be really really bad for that to happen. You say it has little rust, and judging by the fact that you live in ca, I'm going to say your grossly overthinking it.

Also, one thing I haven't seen mentioned in here for parting out is time, and a place to store parts until a buyer comes along. There are parts I had on my shelves for YEARS until I sold them.

Just don't do it. It's a cali car, and you're being silly.
