no kidding right? I wouldn't be surprised, if in fact it did come from Finland, if the first one was also turbo charged with all sorts of "hey look at this simple/incredible metal fab work I did in my shed" bits.

Pete McHenry pioneered many BMW conversions and was the goto guy for performance modifications. He was big on stroker m20's before moving on to 24valve m50/s50 swaps. Back then it was like 10-13k for an m50/s50 swap...so I didn't feel it was worth it. Things are different today. Information is shared and more people are involved. I don't know if he was first in the world but more than likely was in the US.

Local guy had an s50 swapped 318i with zender widebody when I first hit the e30 scene in 2002. The swap had been in the car for years already, so late 90s.

Probably Callaway with their "Quadros" 24 valve M20 in the 80's. Of course then BMW brought out the M50 and it all died before it got off the ground.

I was always told the white sedan that belongs to John Barlow here in SoCal was one of the first (late nineties).

When did the first Hartge H35-24 E30 M3 appear??
Some of the German tuners did the swap in late 80's-early 90's.
Says here the Hartge H35 came around in 1985.

Learned about the H35-24 when I did the S38B36 swap, and wanted to atain a TÛV for the swap.

                          Hartge 24v in a 1985 or 1986 e30 323i. Hartge called it H35-24 286hp. Hartge first H35-24 e30 m3 330hp was built in 1987.

I remember in 1995 I started to hear and see m50 s50 swaps in e30. At that time was expensive to do the swap.

S85 swaps are just becoming somewhat popular and documented… Mmmmmmm. 5 year plan?

                              Scheneller BMW

I think Schneneller BMW may have been one of the pioneers. They swapped an s38 back in 92-93 (see picture). As far as I know, Mike was also friendly with Pete McHenry and they exchanged notes often.

My M3 I bought out of san diego was swapped (i'd need to check the paperwork to be sure) in '99 or '00 with a 1k mile s52 from a '99 e36 that was totalled.
I have some of the paperwork/pics from the shop that did the swap. I haven't gone through the paperwork too carefully, but it cost the owner well over 20k for the swap according to some of the invoices.
