Now that I have some .040 tungsten and gas, I can see how well my rig will lift start.

For cleaning mild steel sheet metal, what should I use? Mild steel brush? I heard brake cleaner is good to use on the metal before tigging. Or acetone?

All those work, if its really dirty (rust or mill scale) I run a flapper disk over it then wipe it down.

Someone tell me about gas lens kits! After seeing images like this:

It seems like a no brainer!

So here is the kit that came with the welder I have. No, my welder doesn't have a solenoid in it to control gas so I need a torch that comes with the gas control knob.

I bought the .040 tungsten because it was recommended for doing thin sheet metal. I know my et of collet are too large so I need new set of collets anyway.

If I am going to have to get a new collet, should I just get a glass lense set or something? I am at a loss on what to buy. Halp?

Looks like you have the WP-17 style torch from the picture you posted. If you'd like the medium sized gas lens kit for .040" you'll need the following parts:

                      Collet - 10N22
                      Gas Lens - 45V24
                      Nozzle - 54N17
                      Gasket Insulator - 54N01

I sell all these at Airgas and I have our brand part numbers for those if you decide to purchase at a branch, if not, they're readily available online. The part numbers I listed are the universal numbers for that torch. Make sure to to get the gasket insulator as the nozzle wont seal properly to the current one on the torch, which is setup for the standard nozzles.

If you'd like to get the Gas Saver kit with the Pyrex Nozzles, i'm looking that up for you right now and i'll link you to it asap!

CK Worldwide makes the Pyrex Gas Saver kits, unfortunately not in .040" size. The smallest they make is 1/16" and they offer the kit in both standard Alumina(ceramic) and Pyrex nozzles.

                          Gas Saver Kit w/ Alumina Nozzles: P/N D3GS116 $22.14
                          Gas Saver Kit w/ Pyrex Nozzles: P/N D3GS116P $42.77

Here's a link to their kits if you'd like to see what comes in it. http://www.ckworldwide.com/standard-kits.html

Conversely, if you choose not to go with that and would like to piece a standard gas lens kit together with the first set of part numbers I posted, here's what you'd be looking at per piece:

                          10N22 collets - $2.23/ea (we sell in a pk of 5)
45V24 gas lens- $7.52/ea (also sell in pk of 5)
                          54N17 alumina nozzles - $2.81/ea (we sell in a box of 10)
                          54N01 nozzle insulator - $ 2.82/ea (sold individually)

Hope that clears it up some!

You guys are amazing. That Dogfab stuff looks rad! And red2.4srt, thanks for telling me what I have. I am out of my element here. A whole new nomenclature to learn!

It does seem that I should get some 1/16th rods and just grind the tips down so I can get more universally acceptable parts. The .040 stuff seems unsupported. Which is a bummer.
