So it looks like from Dogfab, I am going to need the #17 adapter kit for $25 and the #8 cup set for $30. Then some 3/32" tungsten and I can finally get to welding! GAHHH!!

Welding is not cheap.
Get the Fupa cup, it'll work great for 95% of everything you'll weld and offer much better coverage. I have the #8 and #12 fupa and I still haven't ran into a situation where I needed the #8.
No.....welding is not cheap, to many people lack the appreciation of the cost and skill that is involved in making and welding quality parts. I'll go as far to say 98% of this forum doesn't appreciate that fact. Why I don't advertise my services or products on here..........
I definitely appreciate the cost and skill involved. I am working on such a tight budget I can't do anything but try it out myself. I bet 98% of this board is in the same boat.
You guys are amazing. That Dogfab stuff looks rad! And red2.4srt, thanks for telling me what I have. I am out of my element here. A whole new nomenclature to learn!
It does seem that I should get some 1/16th rods and just grind the tips down so I can get more universally acceptable parts. The .040 stuff seems unsupported. Which is a bummer.
Not a problem! If you want prices on anything, i'll see what I can work up and whether we can get it or not, just shoot me a PM!

Both of these are Gods honest truths! One thing i've learned being a welder, you're everyone's friend and they all want it done for cheap or absolutely nothing. Can't tell you how many times i've gotten dragged into projects that had no real profit for myself... LOL

I would consider myself a pretty friendly guy that likes to help people.......but people take advantage of that. To many times have I said ya I can do that, assuming the I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine......And get nothing in return. I have THOUSANDS of dollars wrapped up in all my equipment and people get offended when I say minimum $50. I have to cover my electrical, consumables wear and tear.......AND GOD FORBID if my time and skill aren't worth something either.

You guys do have to realize one thing though; welding is voodoo to most people. They have no idea how much all the equipment costs, consumables cost or the time invested in doing welding properly.
You probably feel you shouldn't have to mention that. But I am a CPA candidate and I am constantly second guessed on every accounting decision I make.
That said, I greatly appreciate all of the knowledge you guys are dispensing on this forum.

Thats a very good point, I bet many of them don't realize a good tig rig cost more then most pay for their e30's haha!

Nahh, they have no freaking clue. My cheap ass Everlast cost $300, used bottles of gas (one empty, one 1/3 full) cost $80, $30 for two sets of .040 tungsten that I can't use currently, $30 for a cheap ass regulator and flow meter, welding gloves for $15, $50 helmet, still don't have fill rod/mig wire, need new cups and collets plus conversion kit $80.
Just about $500 for an extremely cheap, barely capable TIG welding setup. If I was do buy mid-level TIG setup, it would be $1,800 for the machine alone.

What everlast did you get? I have been really eyeballing there 210ext.....
I don't even know what I have into my equipment now but if I was to guess....probably $5000+ quick ballpark.

I got the PowerArc 140ST. DC inverter. So steel only, no aluminum. Does stick as well and does it very well. Dual voltage, lift arc. I have been impressed. I have stick welded down to 20 amps with 1/16" rod and getting good at starting arcs.
Without having much other experience, I have been satisfied with the Everlast.
CK Worldwide makes the Pyrex Gas Saver kits, unfortunately not in .040" size. The smallest they make is 1/16" and they offer the kit in both standard Alumina(ceramic) and Pyrex nozzles.
Gas Saver Kit w/ Alumina Nozzles: P/N D3GS116 $22.14
Gas Saver Kit w/ Pyrex Nozzles: P/N D3GS116P $42.77
Conversely, if you choose not to go with that and would like to piece a standard gas lens kit together with the first set of part numbers I posted, here's what you'd be looking at per piece:
10N22 collets - $2.23/ea (we sell in a pk of 5)
45V24 gas lens- $7.52/ea (also sell in pk of 5)
54N17 alumina nozzles - $2.81/ea (we sell in a box of 10)
54N01 nozzle insulator - $ 2.82/ea (sold individually)
Hope that clears it up some!
Thanks for this info. I am running low on cash and need to just get started welding, so I used the 10N22 number to order up some collets.
I will eventually get a gas lens and stuff. There are other projects I want to do some TIG for. Especially one thing. I have a weird space next to my fireplace and wall that is where I have a make shift crappy stand for my AV stuff that I would like to make a nice stainless stand for.

I was looking at the Everlast PowerTig 250EX, but the only one that's in stock and shows a price is the PowerTig 200DX. Reviews are pretty decent for what it is though and it's making me reconsider my thoughts on the Miller Diversion 180.

This is very very true. (One of my brothers fav anecdotes about today's college students) A few years ago while my brother was in the very beginning of his Mech Engineer studies. His class was set into groups of 4, for a project, my brother being very mechanically inclined and with a garage full of tools, years in hobbiest car fabrication and working in a machine shops R/D prototyping department can build you just about anything you want from scratch or fix anything from your Ipod to your transmission. (yes hes a number of years older than your average college student)
Well the group meets for a design meeting in my brothers garage, of course hes already procured supplies, parts and PLC's form his work suppliers on demo's or old shit laying around the shop. So anyway 1 of the 3 perspective future engineers asks what kind of glue they are going to use to make the metal stick together, with a Miller TIG machine sitting 2 feet to his right. The others are also interested in this prospect as well. Well with out too much hesitation my brother grabs a couple of pieces of scrap AL laying on his work bench his hood and torch are laying there as well (as he was working on inter-cooler piping for a friend when they showed up ) flips the TIG on and proceeds to GLUE the scrap together. After the welding demonstration grabs it with a gloved hand and whacks it on the bench and then throws it down on the floor and of course it holds up. The kids that have no clue what the pointy end of a screwdriver is for are amazed that this kind of VOODO exists and that someone who is only 4 years older than them can do it and has the stuff to do it in their own home shop.
