    worth of a 325ix?

Instead of buying a whole bunch of shit for my car this summer, I'm thinking I should save up for a 325ix as a reliable winter beater, and perhaps daily driver during the cold, rainy months. I'm really hoping to find a 4 door automatic with no major mechanical problems. I don't care what it looks like as long as parts aren't falling off. Not terribly familiar with the value of these e30's so I'm hoping you experienced people at r3v could tell me what they're realistically worth and whether it would be considered a good investment with which to plan my summer earnings around. Thanks.

4 door auto, average condition? asking prices will be around $3000-$3500. makes a great car in the snow/rain, etc, but don't expect it to be fast..

and fyi, cars are not investments. ;)

No such ix unless you find a mint one, or at least one that's had a lot of intensive mechanical repairs recently. Ix-specific parts can be VERY expensive. If you buy a cheap "beater" ix, be prepared to just part it out when the shit hits the fan.

        Yeah, I know :) *sigh*

Seriously though, if I kept it in good enough condition, in my area of Michigan I could probably sucker somebody into paying $5000 for a "classic all wheel drive BMW."

But dang, it's not looking like a smart move. Are the 4 doors more expensive than 5 speed coupes? I figured 4 door slushboxes are less desireable thus easier to find and less expensive.

4 door autos are for sale all the time. 2 door 5spd ix's are the most sought after and therefor rarest variant.

I am an IX owner. These cars are just as reliable as any other e30 if properly mantained (theres the catch). I wouldn't recomend buying a beater because it would soon become a money pit. But if you can find one for less than $5000 in good condition that has been taken care of, I would say buy it. These cars will be priceless in the near future so there aren't many people selling. If you love e30's, can do your own repairs andf have a chance to buy anIX that is in good condition DO IT! If you change the timing belt, lube the splines on the front drive shaft, keep plenty of fluids in the drivetrain than you really don't have much else to worry about.

what if we keep them another 5-10 years? will they start to go up in price? as they are comming closer to being a classic

until more than the small community of E30 enthuiasts sees them as more than an old, outdated BMW, that won't happen any time soon. look, I love my E30, and I've put a lot of money and time into it.. but I accepted the fact that I could never get that money back out of it a long time ago. instead, I get a car that is exactly how I want it, and is different from all the other cars people are infatuated with - that's worth it to me.

Is it just me, or have prices of e30s nearly doubled. Since I got my first one, back in August of last year.

Yeah i hate thinking im wasting my money. well not wasting it.. but i could be actuall investing it. but yet i also enjoy tinkering with e30s. the money could be going to somthing worse. Yeah its hard to accept the fact that you reallly are not gunna get you money back. but i guess i never expected to, so im not that bumbed.
