The E30 rack is fine without the power steering, if you totally delete it.
Which means taking the rack apart and making sure that air can pass freely
through the (now unused) hydraulic section.
The rack will then act just like a manual rack,
and while it's not Ford- light, it's also not tractor- heavy. Whether you like it or
not is really a personal feel thing- coming from a 2002, I thought it was just fine.

If you want to try it, do it with the rack you have now and see how you like it.

But I dunno how a faster (E36, E46 etc) rack would be without power assist...

now, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves

I personally enjoy a heavier manual feeling rack so this sounds like what I need to do. I am however jaunt not happy with the huge turning degree of the e30 rack. I'm thinking Z3 or 330 ZHP rack converted to manual...
      Thanks for the reply

Just got done under the car and found a few more interesting things...
I am trying to install a new shifter arm and bushings, get under the car to drop the drive line and what do we have but the damn exhaust is attached to the cross member. Not great news but will have to figure out a way around it. Any ideas besides cutting away the exhaust?

Damn. Transmission blanket. I though putting them on poodles was silly enough...

              That's awesome!

Do the fuel pumps pull from the crossover pipe locations on the tank?

And even a little bag of snakes.
This is oddly one of the more neat pieces of this car due to the story.

These old beauties were fabricated by Alf Gebhardt. Mr. Gebhardt along with co-drivers Hans Stuck and Walter Brun won 1st place at the Daytona 24 Hour race in 1981, driving one of the all time coolest BMWs, the AC Schnitzer M1. Link of Mr. Gebhardt's racing history in BMWs here http://www.racingsportscars.com/driv...hardt-USA.html

This is the type of thing that makes me feel nostalgic when around this car. Very neat detail and what a racing driver Alf Gebhardt is!
