Now I carry a trip permit unsigned in my glovebox in case I need one.
The last time I got one, they had to know the dates up front.

When we moved, I found an old (mid 90's) one that I'd paid $12 for, and never used.
I wonder how likely it is that I'd get away with using it...

...and I remember back when you didn't even HAVE to have insurance.
    Safety inspections?
We still ain't got that scam goin' yet.

in WA you can keep them as long as you want. You write the date on it yourself, as soon as you do that the 3 days or whatever it is starts. They do not ask you for the start date, if they do then go somewhere else.

I used one to drive a car home from Canada. Worked fine. lol

My buddy put a plate on his to AAA to a shop. Shop parked it outside on the street. Cops ran the plate...same deal he ended up in court. Attached plates and he wasn't even driving. This was also in MA. Glad I moved north. You can register your car at the town hall. No insurance requirements.

If i remember right they ended up throwing out or reducing the charge.

I don't think you need insurance to register your car. At least not in WA. I thought you needed registration before you even got insurance?

Here you need proof of insurance to reg it, so having a reg means it's reg'd and that's your proof of insurance when you get pulled over in MA

??? that seems like a loop. So insurance companies will insure a car in your name even if your name isn't on the title?

Hey you are going to be fine. If you don't have a serious driving record, come up with a dumb excuse and the Judge is probably going to drop the charge and have you pay a HEAVY fine, 200$ I'll say.. Just make sure to show up for that court date when you get it in the mail....

$200 isn't heavy in the world of Fines.

I got hit with $200 for speeding 19 over.

Not a prediction in any way shape or form, but to say "HEAVY fine, $200" (ftfy) is a little contradictory.

Good luck OP, learn from it and move on. Also, read up on your local laws before taking a risk. Sometimes the possible punishment is worth the risk, other times it's not. Best to inform yourself before finding out the hard way.

CT does this. What you have to do is have the PO sign the title over, then go to your insurance company's website, type in the VIN, pick a plan, print out the proof of insurance, and bring it with the title to the dmv.

You can insure whatever the hell you want if you have a VIN and vehicle information lol.

I've bought cars out of state twice. I carry the signed title/Bill of Sale and my current insurance with me when I drive the car back home. I always keep the former owner's plates on the car with their last copy of the reg. I think without going to the DMV that's about as clean as you can be.

Both cars I drove home still had time left on the reg (PO) and (my) current insurance so I don't think I've technically done anything illegal yet.

OP best of luck. I know the feeling you're probably going through.
