    Horrible horrible horrible.

I speak from experience. Dad had his for a good 5 years. Full of nightmares. Me and my dad used to "try" to work on it and it was far too much of a pain in the ass. Rebuilding the VANOS was bonkers expensive, a basic brake service was ridiculous, and forget about changing the spark plugs. We said fuck it and traded it off to a Ford dealer for a Mustang 5.0 after we found out the block was porous and cracked somewhere we couldn't see, and the rear main seal was gone, AND one of the motor mounts were cracked . The BMW dealer told us we'd need a whole new engine, and the price wasn't worth it. We could buy a nice E46 M3 for what they were asking.

Yes the V10 is amazing. Yes "///M Mode" is amazing. The sound is incredible, even better with an aftermarket exhaust. But if one little Itty bitty thing goes wrong, everything else goes wrong. The SMG will be nice until you're in traffic or when it shits itself. It's very jerky and slow in traffic. On an autocross course, it's way more nimble then it's huge body would make you believe. It's very planted. A track is where the car belongs. As a summer car you can thrash on the weekends, maybe. That's what we had it for.

Don't consider it unless you have a metric fuckton of money for repairs.

You want a more reliable M5? Get an E39 or an E34. Fuck anything after that. Excluding the new ones since we haven't owned one yet. We've only had four M5s in our family: two E34s, one E39 and one E60.

    EDIT: For further clarification.

What year? I've heard more complaints with 2006's and 2007's than all the others combined.

My 2010 has been solid, 6 speed as well

I did have a PDC issue, but it was a quick fix.

We had an 09 in Carbon Black with the SMG trans. We could have just had bad luck. Don't get me wrong, it was fun to drive and it's a hard feeling to replicate, but the maintenance was killer and it's not something we would recommend to someone who likes their wallet.

I think lambo was talking about how terrible he is at being a hairdresser.

It's shear disappointment I tell you.

I respect the car but I have never found it attractive at all, this video also sucked and I am refusing to embed it purely for that reason.

"With all the attention that is focused on M5's we can't help but look back... the most notably, the e60"

e60?!? That's looking waaaaaay back alright.

Rod bearing eating POS wouldn't touch a S85 or S65

other than the S62 every BMW motor thats not an inline 6 or 4 is a POS

                      S65 & S85 Rod Bearings
N63 Eats batteries, Oil & has timing chain Issues
                      M70 just crap

How the hell is it a POS? Just change the rod bearings and be done with it!

I've seen this mentality alot toward BMW M engines.. heaven forbid they require more maintenance over an M50 :p

M62 is a great engine as well, and the timing guides are not that hard to do

^This. S54's need rod bearings constantly too, I don't see anyone complaining about them being POS motors. RPM's do stuff to moving parts

I have an e39 m5, it's awesome but kinda ugly. I think I would buy an e60 m5 because I love the car, but they are just a bit more ugly.

                            Yeah.....automatics have no soul.....

I know it is a sequential manual, but she's driving an automatic, not a manual M5

They made 1364 of them and in the late models they are not very common.

Took me 6 months to find mine and its a real treat to drive.. the SMG really took some of the soul away from it.
