I have been saving and searching for an LS1 swap for my E30. I am looking for a 02 or newer with less than 90k on the power train. I have been looking on craigslist and ebay. I have found some reasonable deals that I had considered but none of the deals are backed by any type of warranty and just didn't feel like a safe bet. Where has everyone been buying their swaps? I am aware this is an expensive swap.

Try Car-part.com awesome site.
Also here's some info on building a 4.8 and/or 5.3
Most people look past the small 4.8L engine and go straight for the bigger ones. In this Little LS Slugfest, we compare both stock and modified versions of the 4.8L and 5.3L engines—now you be the small-block Chevy judge!

Actually, I have the all aluminum version of the 5.3 in my Saab, and I am rather impressed with how quickly it can grab revs.. beats the old SBC's I used to build.
Not sure the weight of it compared to abb iron block, but have often thought of I get bored with the m20 in the PRO3 car, I might just toss a L33 in it..

I have considered other V8's including the M60 and the other different variants of the LS engine. They have their benefits including being significantly cheaper. But ultimately they are not what I want. I would hate to have to do another swap again because I was not happy with what I settled with. I want a true LS1 engine out of an F body or a Corvette.

Either pony up for a crate motor or buy the used motor and rebuild it.AWD > RWD

I don't claim to know all the different type of LS1 motors out there. But at minimum I want a 5.7 aluminum block. If there is another variant that is not f-body or Corvette then I was not aware. As for the warranty I am not expecting anything grandiose, something like a start up warranty with nothing wrong with the internals of the engine.
For example: A couple of weeks ago I was looking at a 60K 2003 Corvette powertrain everything minus the transmission for $3200. The engine was already out so I couldn't hear it run and they basically said it ran great before it was pulled but would not offer me at minimum a start up warranty.
I am not asking for the moon but if I am spending the money I wanted some kind of assurance I was getting what I paid for. I have been burned before. I had originally planned on building a bare block up but there are too many "while I am in there upgrades" I would want to do that would make this builds budget greatly increase and time of completion to would be pushed back another year.
I have been looking for wrecked "LS1" cars I have not been having a lot of luck in the search. Perhaps I am looking in the wrong places. I will look into "vette motors" and escalade engines. I was not aware they had a 6.0 aluminum "LS1" engine. Thank you for the constructive criticism please continue. I am learning and this is helping me find my powertrain. How to remove, install or convert to pop out windows
