I have no horse in this race, but if it were me - I would machine down the crank, rather than the gear. it might be easier to machine down the gear, but there's already a minimal amount of material there, I wouldn't want to weaken it.Comment

...but for me, with a Bridgeport and a boring head, opening up the sprocket and pulley's easy,
whereas grinding down the crank nose is very much not.
My vote- try boring out the sprocket. What's the worst that can happen???
