I have been watching prices of S14s since the henna car met its end. Obviously the circumstances of each motor are different, but I've seen "good used" motors (meaning 100k+ mileage but ran-when-pulled) at around an average of $10k.

Rebuilt motors on the other hand vary wildly based upon the amount of work done, what was replaced, who did the work, documentation, warranty, etc.

Bottom line, I think the swapped 318is sold for a fair price. If I bought it I'd immediately be searching for M3 interior and E30 M3 5-lug.

Not surprised at S14 prices. After all they aren't making anymore of them, and it's a racing engine. Not a street engine with a sporty cam, or even a fully built street engine - it's a racing engine from the ground up.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Alpina is going to end up RNM.

Unless bidding crosses 20K, and pushes 30 (which it's a long way to go with only 4 hours left.)

I have a feeling it won't hit reserve either.

RHD, AUTO and not having the expected Alpina spoilers, seats, cluster, etc is probably what most are balking at. Truth be told, it doesn't even look like a legit Alpina.

I also just noticed the cluster has been "Americanized" at some point. MPH, and standard fuel level gauge. Should have had the extra capacity fuel gauge because the optional extended tank was installed..

Well, how about that. Another sold E30. How long until the next 4cylinder E30 pops up?

                  lol..

I was really surprised he had the reserve so low. Makes me wonder if he picked up that car as part of a package for the Alpina C2 Vert he also owns. Both were restored by the same shop.

40k mile 318 is now at 15.8k with 3 hours to go. Will it break $20k?

Hyper inflation. Sure, they are low in production, but not exactly "special." From the M42 forums:

                        Dear Mr Guibo,

                        Thank you for your email.

Unfortunately it's not very much we have in our archives about the US BMW 318is. The only differences between the 318i US and the 318is US were in the Spoilers and some different upholstery for the "is". Therefore both types used the same number range and we cannot find out how many were "i" and how many "is". The total production numbers for the BMW 318i/is US models are:

Four door sedan: 6.730 from May 1990 until May 1991

Two door sedan: 9.779 from December 1989 until May 1991

We hope this is helpful for you.

                        Yours sincerely,

What do you think his reserve is set for?

who knows at this point. I would have guessed 10-12K, but he seems to be trying to get all the $$$, and may have it near 20K.
