m62 Short Block - Howz my compresshun?

I bought this short block for $40 and a 12 pack. I was kind of told that the bottom end should be great. Well, it wasn't. At least I didn't pay a lot for it

Take a look at this carnage!

Aaaaand, the money shot, kill shot, whatever you want to call it...

Basically most of the cylinders show damage, but this one was the proof of a big problem. The groove is deep and wide.

    Just posting this for fun.

I've seen worse. Is the timing chain and guides good?

That would surely be worth 40 bucks and a 6 pack

The motor was literrally the short block, upper oil pan, e39 engine mount arms, oil filter assembly, cylinder heads with valves (no cams) and 6 head bolts.

Isn't that fixable with a slight hone?

Alusil can't be honed at all.

928 Forum - Preparing/Restoring Alusil bores for Dummies - Hi All I have been sure for some time that the process of preparing our blocks for new rings was NOT rocket science or expensive. The forum entry below is long winded BUT well worth reading and is very detailed. Gets interesting from about page 8 onwards....

Yes you can, but I don't know if your block is too far gone. I can't tell if that's just on the surface or if you can feel it with a fingernail.

I picked up a mint looking m62 from a jy car that looked pretty similar. It might be fine. Alusil is weird.

I can't crank the engine over without about 100 lb-ft of force on the crank bolt. The one pic on the bottom showing the big score mark? It's deep. Very deep.

                    bore it and sleeve it.

You'll spend about what another used block would cost. But then you can go 4-stage NAWWWWSSSS crazy!!!

Yep. There is no way I would spend money getting this block back to working order when its so cheap to do something else.

I'll tear down the rest of the block this weekend and post up pics. I haven't done that to an engine before so I may as well do an autopsy.
