Roads are not perfectly flat. The oil pan is the lowest part of the car. This is poor design imho.

the factory skid plate can take a lot of abuse and its saved me twice. my skidplate is really low and i hit a big ass brick at 60mph. enough to raise the car as i went over it. it didnt contact the pan. another time i hit a speed bump at about 25 after not seeing it in the dark on an unfamilar road. i bottomed the skid plate on the downstroke. they are tough as hell.

That 666 one looks a lot heavier duty than the OEM one. Plus, according to that link you can't get the OEM one. BMW should have made it a standard part.

Oh Snaps, I just came back from the 666fab website and got done looking at pictures of the skidplate installed. Then I remembered, that I posted a question asking to see pictures. I come back here, then ta-da! They're here. Fast people.

Actually the OEM one I have is much much heavier, and is probably stronger... however there are supposivly two, yes two OEM skidplate designs. One for early models (Pre 9/87) and one for late models (After 9/87).

The thing that sucks is I'm pretty sure I got the early model one for my early model, yet my steering rack holes don't line up with what I thought were the steering rack holes in the skidplate. This isn't a huge problem but I may just sell it when it's the last one on earth. I like Jon's design though, I like that it isn't strips of metal, and it will go on my M20 car after I help give some specs to help make a perfect fitting E30 M/S5X plate.
