Yeah..Mark (I think is his name)The E46 M3 is supposed to get a valve adjust every 15k miles. Not sure if it really needs it that often. But the valve adjust done at the dealer is over $1,000 I was told, actually close to $1,500.
Strictly BMW in Bellevue told me that they have yet to do a valve adjust on an E46 M3 because when the customers hear the cost, the opt not to do it.
One of the owners of Griots Garage opted for the E46 M3 SMG package even though he's a total car guy because he has the killer commute over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and all the 1-2-1-2- shifting in his old stick shift BMW was beginning to hurt his back.
Talked to him about it fairly in depth, his was also the first SMG E46 I was able to get underneath and actually inspect in terms of the shift mechanics.

The E46 M3 valve adjust is every 15k, most other BMWs are at a longer interval. I've confirmed this with a number of BMW repair shops who have donated Inspection I and Inspection IIs to the BMW Club charity banquet, but they omit the E46 M3 in their donation because they don't want to give away the spendy valve adjust that is required in the Inspt. 15k is oil service with micro filter, 30k is Inspection 1, and 60k is Inspection 2. E46 M3 valve adjustment is on the Inspection 2 checklist. Not sure what the aftermarket does, but I can assure you thats what BMW calls for.The E46 M3 valve adjust is every 15k, most other BMWs are at a longer interval. I don't agree with the oil service intervals. I would change it at least every 8k.
That is unless BMW uses oil and oil filters up to par with Amsoil, but I doubt it.

I agree, with the 15k oil service intervals these engines will NOT be lasting 250k miles regularly like the older stuff. Unfortunately, the longer intervals, lifetime fluids, etc are side effects of BMW's 4 year/50k mile full maintenaince warranty that is included with every car.'91 318is
