Sure, the e30 m3 is probably up there with some of the most beautiful cars of all time. But the performance? eh...for 10 to 15 k it doesnt seem like a very logical choice. I am not hating at all, I LOVE the e30 m3. This video on youtube takes away its mystical appeal tho. I mean, that delta integrale was understeering like a bitch and still won.
Hm maybe the e30 m3 isnt worth the money..

Sure there are plenty of cars out there for similar (or less) money that could wax the E30 M3 in some performance criteria, but what those 'others' don't have is the bragging rights of being the most successful Touring Car racer of all time. That and the fact that ~5000 copies made it to US shores and probably half of them are still around since the rest have been smashed/stolen/etc. It's a car you just don't see everyday. I know of a few locally, but don't see them driven very often.

Eh, the comparisons they make on those shows are on purely stock cars.
Everytime BMWCCA has a race here in Phoenix, the guy out front is a stockish looking E30 M3 (meaning body panel wise). It's sad when the professionally built e36's and e46's can't keep up with a 20 year old car.
BTW, since when does the value of a car have anything to do with its performance on a track?

Doesn't really surprise me at all. Throw a 2.5 liter evo 3 motor and group n coilovers on it with hoosiers.. then it will be fun. Stock sucks.:: PNW Crew ::

If in a persons mind its not worth the money (which is a completely valid opinion, we dont all think alike), then the E30 ///M3 is not the car for said person. Performance isnt what makes this car valuable. Get a Camaro if you want torque, or a Jap car if you want cheap FWD hp. Shit one can even get a E36 ///M3 for the same price nowadays. :)

true story. most e36 m's are going for $7.5 - 13k.
e46 m's are about to drop like rocks (its already started), its funny how many of them pop up for sale everyday. they all see it coming.
e30 m3 ftw.

Nice story. Not looking for excuses but the Lancia is turbocharged with slightly more HP, AWD and probably weighs slightly less than the M3 (it does appear to be a smaller hatchback). I'd still take the M3 any day of the week."I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

In some ways I agree. I used to own a really nice 2.5 E30 M3 (below) with all the EVO III stuff. To be sure it was a fun car. However, while Camaros, Mustangs, Corvettes don't make good substitiutes - their are a number of cars that certainly do. For the price I sold the M3, I could haved picked up a used 2000 Boxster S (and would have if my beautiful baby girl had not arrived). For me, there's no comparsion between these cars. IMHO the Boxster is better balanced, more fun to drive, with much better steering, brakes, etc etc. A superior car.http://youtube.com/watch?v=DaK7KhQADSs

The analysis is the same for the stock E30 M3 2.3. For a similar price, you can pick up a nice 2.7 liter boxster.
And these days the 996s are getting awfully cheap. These cars have WAY more performance than most any M3.
These are some of the reasons I sold the M3. The 325is is a much better value in that it offers 95% of the goodness of the M3 at 1/4 the price.1995 Porsche 993 6 speed

This concept can be used for a lot of specialty cars of the past
I mean, why do some people buy Land Rover D90, Mercedes 500E, Deloreans (to just name a few)? They are just special cars. Not everybody is looking for maximum performance for the dollar.Comment
