My Car Keeps Eating Guibos!! -- Why???

alright, so 3 months ago i brought my car into shop to have the "clunking on acceleration "problem diagnosed.

For some reason my fairly new Guibo was Shredded to the bones. They diagnosed it as a "Binding rear u-joint" and reccomended full driveshaft replacement. $800+ and a brand new driveshaft later...

3 months and now it is today. I returned the car to the same shop for the same problem, which started small and progressed for the past 2 weeks. It acted and progressed just as before.

This time they inspected it and found a horribly worn guibo, on its way to being shred like before, and a torn CSB, which was where the most of the vibration seemed to come from while inside the car.

They first said they did not know, and would warranty the parts, and this was the last time. (and first.) So they began to dissassemble the DS.

get this, Next the lady tried to blame it on the "Driver", stating "these things arent made to be driven like this, i see evidence of torque. its not made to be drag raced on from a dead stop. you are obviously driving the car too rough."

I had to talk to the only technician there who has a brain in his head, and is consequently the youngest, and owners son. He assured me theres no way that the above could be true, Which i tried to tell the lady.

I asked them to check everything, from the runout of the transmission flange, to the brand new driveshaft, and the differential( diff has some play but not unusually large amounts)

But everything they knew to check they said was fine.

And i was sure to have them check.

So the end is the lady says they wont warranty the parts again, (Bullshit), and that the labor cost is not covered by the warranty.

i ended up wasting all day and paying 119 dollars for a new guibo and CSB that may fail in the next two months.

    Any suggestions?

    thanks for reading.

Trans mounts / motor mounts. If those are letting the trans move around a bit, it will kill the guibo and CSB.

CSB... or if you are unlucky... your driveshaft has to be unbalanced, and will keep eating things because it's a hungry unbalanced driveshaft.

I know its a long first post, but if you read it you will see that the driveshaft is Brand new. as was the csb and guibo before the driveshaft was replaced, and when it was replaced, it was done with new everything. the shaft came bolted together with a CSB already on it, balanced and ready to install.

Tell me more about the harmonic balancer on the Front of the engine?

does it go all the way through the crank, clutch, and tranny?

id think i would have way worse problems closer to the source before i consistently ate guibos for lunch. this is just a matter of months before its undrivable due to lack of identifiable flex disc.

After reading (not skimming) I'd take a look at your motor mounts and tranny mounts like HST suggested. That's about all I can think of.

Sorry you got shafted (no pun intended) by the driveshaft people.

did you put it in with the right orientation? the guibo is designed to go in a certain direction. don't ask me how I found out :p

the arrows are supposed to point to the flanges. if you put it in wrong, they won't last very long. mine had 6k and were basically paste by the time I noticed.

OK - I'm really curious as well. I was about to change my guibo and CSB to fix the same problem. Should I replace the motor mounts and tranny mounts as well?

Also - I'm a 2002 guy - so WTF is a harmonic balancer? I just heard someone say it could cause this problem - and in other posts i've heard people say shit like "if you still have one throw it away"

so, what does it do and why do I need it?

Did they pre-load the CSB? I went through like 5 of them for not pushing it 4-6mm forward before tightening it into place.

Before you tighten down the two bolts all the way you slide it around 5 MM forward, then tighten it. It puts a small amount of force on the CSB so it doesn't move around as much.
