Have you guys seen the kind of 3D modeling I like to do? My 2GHz P4 is wayyy too slow.

i realized a while back that i'll never be satisfied with the performance of any computer i own. the more megahertz and memory they get, the more gets hogged up by the newer programs and OS's.

i personally think the next leap in computers will come from how we interface with them...i mean the keyboard and mouse is decades behind the rest of computer technology in terms of advancment/replacement.

when's the last time you saw your mom do any 3d modeling? that's what I mean by MOST people, and I'm sure that includes a lot of people here, unless you do a lot of PC gaming or something.

besides that, a 2ghz P4 is pretty slow anyway. clock for clock an inexpensive Athlon XP would rape it, especially in 3d rendering and FPU performance where AMD has had the upper hand since the days of the original Athlon. but for most people checking their email or posting on this website, it doesn't matter. Any new computer these days is overkill for the majority of people's uses.

                  centrino isn't a CPU, it's a collection of mobile technologies. ;)

I'm not really going to read through this whole thread, but heres the deal:

The CPU is generally never at fault. Computers lockup because of shitty hardware, crappy software, improper heating, and shitty power supplies.

Shitty Hardware: Don't be cheap and buy shitty RAM. Buy the best RAM you can possibly afford. Also, try to match up your FSB speeds (use DDR400 RAM for a mobo/cpu that runs a 400MHz FSB). Don't use crap video cards, sound cards, or network cards.

Crappy Software: Use new or known-good drivers and keep your system up-to-date. Make sure you get the mobo/chipset drivers because they're VERY important.

Improper heating: Don't buy a waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles CPU fan, get something that is designed for the amount of heat your processor will let off. Also get some decent airflow in your case.

Shitty PSU: Another big no-no. Stick with the big brands out there like Antec and Enermax... unless you know who the good small guys are (zalman for example).

With that in mind, AMD systems usually experience instability because one of the above reasons. They aren't as forgiving as intel systems. You need to run a proper power supply, good cooling, and a good motherboard with good RAM.

There are things that AMD systems do better, things that intel systems do better. Find out what you wanna do, and pick the right system.

I've had a P3-533 that I could play quake3 and burn CDs @ the same time. Computer NEVER froze/crashed. I bought damn good hardware @ the time. Left this thing on for weeks at a time with no problems.

My work machine is an XP2000 running gentoo. I can easilly get a 60-day uptime on this machine because it was built properly.

Also, I work at an ISP with many servers of all different CPU-types. I've noticed that the AMD systems with good cooling are solid. The AMD systems that don't have as good of cooling tend to die of hardware failure.

My opinion is that you can make a kick-ass system with AMD or Intel parts assuming you know what you're doing and you use good hardware.

                            Exactly!

If you want a badass AMD system, buy parts from reputable manufacturers. No-name brands are a no-no.
