have fun with that....i just changed out my fan clutch and water pump on my 85 318 and holy crap that 32mm nut just wouldnt budge...

you need to do one of two things

1. have a fan clutch tool, with should make your life easier
2. your ghetto, and you dont feel like spending 40-50 bucks on a fan clutch removal tool...so you just get a 32mm wrench (usually one that isnt very wide since you dont have much room to get it in there in the first place) and some vice grip pliers to put on the pulley...get that wedged against the block, and take the nut off...usually you want to pb blast it a few times before attempting this since its probably been awhile since its last been taken off..

i did number two, and after a shit load of pb blaster...and a torch to heat that damn bolt up, it came off eventually. i nearly stripped that damn bolt taking it off. good thing i had a new fan clutch to throw in there cause i deff roasted the old one heating that bolt up.

and its reverse threaded, if ya didnt know. did you do the top end rebuild yourself? if you did then i dont need to tell you how to do anything. just felt like venting about my fan clutch / water pump job the other day.

Why wouldnt you just put a 32mm open end on it, take a hammer and hit the boxed end on the top left side so it turns the wrench clockwise? Kind of like an impact tool. I have done it on 4 or 5 e30s with no problems!

Water is also highly effective at getting rid of carbon deposits. Run it through like Seafoam (suck small amounts through a vacuum line) and it'll clean off deposits as well. Best part, it's virtually free.

i have tried seafoam in my cars before and if done properly it works but i have also have had the misfortune of putting it in my gas tank of my 79 jeep (all steel might i add) which then led to i believe 8 fuel filters cause all of the rust broke up. but I have always had some sort of noticeable difference. from what i understand is it is made of a bunch of alcohol so it cleans and attracts water.

This is how I've always done it and have never had a problem when combined with a little PB.

i seafoamed my 88 iX with 147K miles at my buddy's shop.

need to give you a little background of the shop. It's Bimmerclinic in Elizabeth. Bill's the owner and it's on 704 Trumbull St. For those that don't know, Trumbull is a busy street right next to tankers on rails and down the street is a HAZMAT Fire Department.

So i get there. bring the bottle out and he helps me out since i've never done this and wasn't sure what i was expecting............. oh boy was it fun.

#1: i found out i have an exhaust gasket that's going bad. how did i know? when Bill put the line in the bottle, he got a face full of white smoke. it's not a bad leak but it's there.

#2: if you ever want a HAZMAT fire department to shit bricks and come running out with full sirens and horn, Seafoam down the street from them! HAHAHAHHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the smoke was so thick and travelled down the block i think someone called fire and it was so thick i didn't notice them rolling up until the truck made it pass the smoke. i was deafed by the revving motor and blinded by the smoke. when they pulled up, Bill told them we're just cleaning out the motor and they looked at the car like: "wow, it's fucked up". well, it's not. on the contray.



what can i say. i'm a believer. the iX idles super smooth now and like Herpies: BAM! the trottle just revs the motor very happily. now, tomorrow is the test. will it pass emissions this time after i failed last week.

seafoam smoothed my idle out after only 1/3 of a can, while poking around I also found my air box was sucking PS fluid (cause of a leak) and had a clogged filter.

seafoam didnt do shit, let it sit once for 5 minutes, then the next time i let it sit for a few hours, smoked for like 20 minutes run time

There's no need for a video. Here's what you do:

1. Find the small hose that comes out of the side of the intake manifold and goes to the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Disconnect it on the FPR end. (Note the red arrow in the pic below.)

2. Start the car, get out and stand on the driver's side of the car.

3. Set the can of Seafoam on the engine so that you can fit the hose down into the can. (IIRC, there's a spot right near the FPR that will hold the can nicely so it won't flop around.)

4. With your right hand, open the throttle to get the R3Vs up a bit, say 1500 RPMS.

5. With your left hand, lower the hose into the can of Seafoam while keeping the engine running by modulating the throttle with your right hand. It will suck it up quickly as long as you keep the engine running. :)

6. Let the engine die once you've sucked up between 1/3 and 1/2 of the can. (Any more than that is a waste from what I've seen.) Replace the hose on the FPR.

7. Let the car sit for a while. Some say 5 minutes, some say they've waited an hour or more. I did ~30 minutes last time and it worked great.

8. Start the car and watch the billowing clouds of smoke! I would let the car run in your driveway or wherever until the initial clouds dissipate before driving since every time you apply the throttle you'll blast out another one.

9. Come back to this thread and tell everyone how much better your car runs. :)

If you have any questions PM or email me. It's a very simple procedure and honestly makes a big difference. FYI, I usually pour the rest of the can into the gas tank.

i dunno if it would be a great idea to put it in the tank, cause it will more than likely loosen up all rust and crud down there, and continuesly clog fuel pumps and filters if bad enough. Just like how you prolly shouldn't just start using synth. oil with 200k miles on the car, because all that sludge has to go somewhere.

It's no different than fuel injector cleaner. One of the recommended uses printed right on the can is to put it directly into your tank.
