My dad drove a VW fastback with no battery or starter for over a month. He just parked on a hill near his house and walked to his car everyday. Then after work he just had a few coworkers give him a push. And this was while he was a mechanic. LOL
Back OT, it;s hard on the alternator to run without the batter helping supply power. The alternator isn't designed to run everything in the car, just recharge the battery. You'll end up frying the diodes in the alternator.Comment

Here at the racetracks, they race the cars without a battery and nothing fries, But it takes just a little bad luck to fry something, so play it safe....My dad drove a VW fastback with no battery or starter for over a month. Mechanical advantage to turn the engine? You would have more advantage in 5th to turn the engine with the wheels than in a lower gear. Power flow is going the other way.-Dave

Yes. That is true. "Mechanical Advantage" was probably not the best choice of words. 5th gear certainly makes it easier to turn the engine using the wheels but it will not spin the engine as quickly as if you had it in 2nd or 1st.Comment

i always do it in second, or if i can in reverse. seems easier in reverse to me... easier to push too. i park on a incline everyday with my e28 and i bump start it frequently cuz its more bad ass to start your car that way:nice:m106 1990 e30
