Hell, it could be started on your own - as long as you had a slight hill, and a nice running start - you could jump in and get er' started! LOL
You don't even need a hill, I have push started my car by myself several times. My friends started went out around a month ago and he has been push starting his corolla by himself every day and he has to go slightly uphill to get out of his apartment parking lot.

My dad drove a VW fastback with no battery or starter for over a month. He just parked on a hill near his house and walked to his car everyday. Then after work he just had a few coworkers give him a push. And this was while he was a mechanic. LOL

Back OT, it;s hard on the alternator to run without the batter helping supply power. The alternator isn't designed to run everything in the car, just recharge the battery. You'll end up frying the diodes in the alternator.

Here at the racetracks, they race the cars without a battery and nothing fries, But it takes just a little bad luck to fry something, so play it safe....

I was thinking the same thing. You have much less of a mechanical advantage in 5th gear vs doing it in 2nd. When push starting alone I pop it in 1st.

Bumpstarting in reverse isn't that bad...I even saw a chick do it yesterday in her old MR-2. One foot out the door pushing back out of the parking space, got it rolling slightly and she was off. It looked like that was the way she started it every time.

in my friedns eta he would slip it into second with the car off, take off the emergency brake and then crank the car as it pulls itself forward and the car started.

                fun fucking times.

Yeah seoirusly, 5th has like no torque from stop. I do it in 2nd

Mechanical advantage to turn the engine? You would have more advantage in 5th to turn the engine with the wheels than in a lower gear. Power flow is going the other way.

Yes. That is true. "Mechanical Advantage" was probably not the best choice of words. 5th gear certainly makes it easier to turn the engine using the wheels but it will not spin the engine as quickly as if you had it in 2nd or 1st.

5th will not always turn the motor enough for the motor to fire...

i always do it in second, or if i can in reverse. seems easier in reverse to me... easier to push too. i park on a incline everyday with my e28 and i bump start it frequently cuz its more bad ass to start your car that way:nice:
