riiiight.. so you believe that oil is an infinite resource? I suppose you think the world is flat then, too?

tonytony, production in Texas peaked decades ago. OPEC will have oil long after we do.

*nod* that's why they're trying to drill up in alaska... or maybe they are, not sure.

          Why are prices so high?

          Demand.

          What could possibly help it?

REFINARIES - we haven't had a new refinary built for over 15 years! And the demand has only gone UP. We can't refine our crude oil fast enough to keep up with demand. That, and the damn environmentalists - all of whom probably drive Chevy Suburbans - are the reason we have to refine the oil so much to meet demands in places like CA. That's why prices are so high there - the oil has to be refined even more than for other places.

Also - thanks for the wonderful environmentalists once again - they won't let us drill off shore either. If we had been drilling off shore since we WANTED to get start quite a few years ago - we'd be a lot better off.

And, drilling in alaska, as stated, is not possible because of the damn environmentalists once again. Hoyl crap - it's not like we're tearing down a friggen forest. We need what, 3-5 acres to set up what we need to drill oil. Also, the pictures they showed of the place we were supposedly going to drill was some wild life picture. The actual place we're going to drill is, as I understand it, quite barren.

I think it's also outragious that certain people want Bush to start using our reserve. That is the worst idea I have ever heard. What if our oil supply was totally cut off from us? Ooops - we used our reserve when prices were too high - no oil. People that want to use reserves now are complete morons, and are too worried about high gas prices. Things could be a lot worse...

Price is now $5.38/gal here so stop whining

filling one 60liter e30 tank to the rim assuming it´s totally empty = $80

You don´t need to worry so much about fuel,, is eveything else fails we simply get something else, besides everybody is working on new fuels

Remember that guy who invented fuel with almost 50% water in it, better mileage more compression more power, and don´t say it´s BS cause he won the inventor of the year back in ´96 (25years in research) also some other reward in ´98 , there is such a fuel station opening in Maryland soon,,

Also those roller cams,, way less mileage, alot more power, alot better emission,,
there are some motorcycles coming out with this engine tech. also some truck company has struck a deal with them , running a 13liter diesel engine

Combine the two and you can drive your 5.0liter V8 (800hp) 0 emission, getting 90mileage anywhere you like

Things are only going to get better, gasoline is just another form of a fuel there is plenty out there

I think it's time for "regime change" in Saudi Arabia.

Can't we just bulldoze both of those countries and sell it off to exxon-mobil? We're already hated by all the muslim countries, it's not like it will make it any worse.

a better idea would be to come up with alternatives to oil and leave the rest of the world fighting over the arabian sandbox.. once the oil supplies are gone/we've moved on, they'll be back to having nothing but sand and camels anyway.

besides, the military uses a lot of fuel. in fact, it's probably contributing to at least some of the high fuel prices here; tanks and hummers don't exactly get 30mpg. :)

rofl I forgot about this "day".

not that I would have followed it anyway.

irony is, although I can't afford gas everytime, I got to use mom's card today, and not only did I fill my tank up with 91 octane chevron, but I also filled her CLK320, and my step-dad's harley-davidson F150.

I think I spent about $120 in gas just today.

Excuse us for wanting non-carcinogenic air to breathe. Houston and Los Angeles, the two most polluted cities in the USA, consequently have the largest percentage of young childred with asthma. And that, coupled with the fact that over half have no health-care coverage to afford a steroid-inhaler, doesn't lead to good consequences. It means more ER trips for oxygen treatment, which leads to the city using more tax dollars to treat them.

I've actually done quite a bit of research on this subject. Drilling in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge makes absolutely no sense. Unlike the Prudhoe Bay drilling in Alaska of the recent past, the oil reserves in ANWR are not concentrated in one area, they are small reserves spread out over a vast area, which happens to be the largest national park in the US. In terms of human population, there are very little inhabitants (mostly national forrest service workers); however, there is an enormous animal population, hence the name of the park (the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge.) The immense network of oil wells and drills, which would need to be set-up in order to tap the miniscule amount of oil there would undoubtedly disrupt the migration of numerous species of elk, caribou, wolves and other wildlife (when the animals don't migrate to mating grounds, they don't mate, thus the population would decline dramatically). The migration disruption was observed during the drilling project at Prudhoe Bay, and one cannot even fathom the extent of damages which the wildlife in the area would incur if the vast drilling project were to take place in ANWR. So there's my hippie-argument against it, and now for my economic and pragmatic one. The oil companies which will drill in the ANWR (if they ever do) are heavily subsidized by you and I (read: taxpayers). It will cost literally hundreds of millions of dollars to set up the drills/wells to pump the oil out as well as the hundres (if not thousands) of miles of pipelines needed to transfer the crude oil to areas where it can be placed in barrels. I'm not sure if any of you have seen the map of the oil reserves in the ANWR, but it looks like somebody splattered paint on a map. The oil reserves are very tiny and very numerous, thus the need for so many drills and pipelines. This pork-barrel project isn't worth the miniscule amount of oil which is projected to be available in the ANWR. If we are even able to extract the maximum amount predicted of crude oil from the ANWR, it will amount to less than 2% of our YEARLY consumption (a mere drop in the bucket) and it will take a predicted ten years to refine. It will do NOTHING to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. To me, and many others, it just doesn't seem worth the risk to the wildlife in the area, and not to mention the many millions of tax-payer dollars, to embark upon a project which will yield such dismal results.[/b]
