    '87 325is - $50,147.16 in Today's Dollars

    My car's previous owner had the original window sticker - $27,399 for a fully loaded '87 325is Coupe. Adjusted for inflation, today the car would cost $50,147.16.

    How much were E30 M3's going for when new?

        Really? That seems low according to what you said the 325is was.

            Even more disgusting to think about is the fact that my $21,xxx 85 325e had ~$20,000 in dealership-only maintenance between 1985 and 2000. After 2000 when I bought it, I put another ~$15k in mods/restoration/parts swapping (I put over 110k miles on it in those 7 years - that's a lot of maintenance).

            That's probably close to $100k with inflation, for an eta.

                the biggest difference could be that the 325i is an 87 and the m3 is a 90. I dont think there would be that much variation in 3 years however. Not sure if its that accurate.

                  yeah, if you divide 50,147.16 by 27,399, it comes out to 1.83. If you multiply 36,324.00 by 1.83, it comes out to 66,472.92. granted, theres 3 years in between, but not that much.

                    ^^ Not sure you're looking at inflation properly. Granted it's been a long time, but I think you compound inflation the same way you do interest. Using my trusty HP 12C (15 year old financial calculator relic, still the best) I got the following:

                    87 325is

                    i = 3.0% (general inflation rate assumption)
                    PV = 27,399 (present value in 1987)
                    n = 20 (# of years)
                    FV = 49485$ (Future Value - now)

                    90 m3

                    i = 3.0%
                    PV = 36,324$
                    n = 17
                    FV = 60038$

                    You can get more specific numbers with an online calculator that has actual inflation historical data.

                        Anyone know what a 325es stickered for in '86? Keep in mind an es, not a standard e.
