Hmm. Actually, I have a question. Who else has removed a windshield from an airbag car? I did one a little while ago and was cursing because there was in fact adhesive around the windshield in addition to the locking strip. I had figured it was simply replaced incorrectly. (kicking myself for not noticing if it was OE glass or not) You say there was adhesive on your '91 when it was being removed as well? Hmm..... could be a coincidence, but airbag cars are a little different in a few areas.

I replaced the windshield in my '91 airbag car and there was no adhesive at all, and it was oem BMW glass too (had the BMW marking on it)...

Ok, weird that both cars had adhesive added. Was a major pain in the ass, ended up really breaking it and getting glass dust everywhere.

I completely understand where everyone is coming from about M3's and non M's with and w/o "glue".
I picked this car up from the factory in germany and its been in my posetion ever since then. The windshield had the original stickers and everything so it was never changed.
Maybe i should clarify, its not glue, that i found around the gasket. Its the black rubbery and REALLY sticky sealant. If you push your finger over it, you can "roll" it off the car. The stuff around the glass looked to be the same, but had dried, ending up like a glue. I seriously had to cut the window out but hey, i think of it as structural.
All I'm stating is my observations and I would like it done right. If no sealant or anything in the gasket is right, then i'll consider that route.
I will definetly stand by having kicked the guy out, he didnt deserve to be paid with his attitude towards me.
          Thanks for the conversation guys.

i can ask my dad if you want. Been a factory trained bmw tech since the late 70's. He can strip and reassemble e30's with his eyes closed. Actually his eyes are normally closed since he prefers to work by feel most of the time.

I've had several E30 windshields replaced, and I can spell "possession". There was no sealant or anything on them.

Perhaps some cars got sealant from the factory if their windshields were problematic with small leaks or ill fitment?

That's what i'm thinking. It didn't pass some leak test or something along those lines and they just put the glue/sealant on it to get it to pass and go out the door.

So just because he was angry with you means that you get a free job? Wow. Then I am owed countless fast-food meals, movie tickets, and stuff from Advance Auto to say the least.

I seriously doubt that would be a procedure at the factory... seriously

had my windshield replaced on 2 e30's. as stated numerously by others, no liquid gasket/adhesive at all on either the origionals being popped out, or the new ones going in.

I don't know you personally and haven't had the chance to e-fight you, but you come off very arrogant in this thread. Any time someone is working on your car and they have an attitude, you shouldn't match it, whats to say this guy isn't going to come back and key or slash your tires. Its nice to see someone take a lot of pride in there car but you gotta be level headed when it comes down to someone thing like glass. Its just glass and if it doesn't get done right the first time (yes its an inconvenience), its something that can be done quiet easily compared to an engine rebuild that cost tons $$$$. I'm not trying to flame you but a chill pill is definitely needed and maybe an apology on your part even if the glass man was an ass. He's just doing his job.

Yeah seriously, you need to just give it up. You probably told the guy he was wrong, and that would piss me off too. I would then treat you like the ignorant ass that you are.

Bottom line: He's right, you're wrong. And you lash out at people for jumping on a bandwagon? What does it take for you to admit that you're wrong?

Who can say i'm wrong, wrong at what? You guys are seriously picking me up in a different light. I am chill. Hell, i was nice the the guy the whole way through. He started installing the gasket, i asked if there was supposed to be a sealer first because thats what came out. He said he doesnt normally do that so i asked does he have any, i would like it the way it was. He threw his hands in the air and walked out of the garage. I asked what the problem was, he showed me some stuff he used on american cars, i said cool. He went back in and got the gasket in all the way up to the top and it had a hump in it where it wasnt pulled in right. So he tried forcing it and its crimping and such. I tried to help by pointing out that he can pick up the slack in the bottom corner where he didnt tuck it in very well. Then he snapped back at me saying how he would rather do his work without me standing "over him". That was time for me to pull the plug because i didnt want this asshole doing a crappy job from the start. The attitude towards me was poor and his partner looked like he was coked up, he wouldnt stand still, walking around all figity.
I had apologized that his services wasnt going to cut it today as he left. I immediately called the company owner (Who i originally thought was going to do this) to let him know why i was disappointed and had to send the guy away along with apologies for wasting his time.
To add to it, when i say the sealant was from the factory, then dont give me a smart ass remark that non-M's NEVER had a sealant. Ive removed windshields from two other older e30s and both of them didnt have the shit either. This car has an airbag specific gasket and is late model which could possibly make all the difference. And i do like to hear about all the cars you guys have seen that havent had the sealant.
All i was looking for in my original post was for info on the best way to install a windshield in our cars.
This topic doesnt need to be fueld any further as to how wrong and a dick i was because you really dont know what went down. Nor does it even matter.

One of these days when I'm visiting my MiL in Charleston, I'll take you out for a beer.

I'm guessing you're like me - a picky type who wants it done right. In this case, I'm guessing you caught the wrong guy on the wrong day, interfered with somebody who does this for a living and has likely done E30 windshields before and pissed him off. The fact that he winds up being right is just icing. I wouldn't get defensive about it - I'd just say "Oops - well he and I weren't getting along anyway."

                              Cheers!
