I have the 5.00 software on my m50 and need to have the 5.1 flashed on to my ecu to solve a cold start problem I have. This is according to the shop that I take my car to, and I have read a little bit about it on line as well. Any ways I called the dealership and they told me that they really don't support cars that old, and its really to old to run well anyways. In fact he told me that back then BMWs had a really hard time starting in the cold anyways. In addition to that the service manager whom I was talking to said that if the car was running now, it might not run at all if I changed anything. What the fuck! Its a shame BMW does not stand behind their old cars the way the Mercedes does. I would love to call every dealership on the east coast and record the shit they tell me, and then send the tape to BMW North America.

Did they dealership even notice you'd done a swap? I'm guessing... No.

I know the dealership i work at refuses to work on a car in my town the guy swapped a S52 into a 325i- basically made his own e36 m3.
Its very wrong of you to stereotype BMW dealerships though. just because (your) dealeship doent want to mess with your car, doesnt mean all dont. they probably dont really know much about the older motors anymore.
I would also think it would cost you about half to just buy a different ECU from Ebay.- at approx. 10 dollars every 5 min. for programming it could get just a bit expensive for you.

my dealership told me once "we dont fix cars like yours anymore, and the only tech not still collecting baseball cards when this car was made was just let go"
All I needed was an ECU.
Then the service advisor asked me if i did coke. I filed a formal complaint and got him fired too.1989 Bronzit 325ia- Sold

lol. i go to an independent shop. they arnt as fancy as the dealer ship. but they get parts from the dealership. I dont ever get any service done there. ive thought about it. but havent. not cuz it cost money, but just because id rather do it myself. the shop also has a junkyard of bmws out back. most the time if i grab something small the owner will be like just take it buddie. he is a really nice guy.
If you ever need service or parts in Louisville, ky

Srsly, what's up with that dealership 02stu. Soo many e30 still on the roads gonig strong and they treat it as a 3.0 CSL classic.

stealers by and large just want to do warrant work and source the parts for said work. They don't want to dig through the ETK to find parts, they don't want to work on "old" motors, etc. I only take my x5 to the dealer because I have to, everything else goes to independant shops.PNW Crew

4 techs at Hendrick (local dealer) drive E30's, and a couple drive E28's. I think one even drives an E24. They dont cry about old cars coming through, but it just doesnt happen. It's rare for techs at the dealer to see E36's anymore, much less anything older.
I hate you had that experience though, that sucks.
