Hard to find, and when I do find one they are either over priced or autos.

What are maintence costs like on a 300D? D=Diesel right? They look like they have power and would be more of a burden than an enjoyment to drive.

umm parts are fairly cheap (used), not expensive unless you have serious parts breakdown. there are plenty of broke down w123's to take parts from. I actually own a 300Dt which is the 5cyl diesel turbo model, the 300D is the 5cyl which in my opinion is slightly underpowered. If you really want a good DD benz the 240D will get you better millage yet and they also made more US models then the 300's.

If I wanted an SUV, I would get another Jeep YJ, I already have had 2.

If you were to go the 190e route, make sure you get the 2.6, the 2.3's were absolute junk.

I'd go with a 89-94 Subaru Legacy SS or Touring Wagon. Good gas milage, AWD, turbo, and dead reliable. I miss my wagon terribly,

Foxbody without a doubt. Reliable cheap fast and fun as hell. Whoever said they didnt like them because they see them every day is just digging for excuses, I see twice as many E30s as I do foxbodys.

Your kidding yourself if you think you can get 20mpg in the city though. I got about ten in the city with mine (driving it the way its supposed to be driven) and my best tank of gas ever was a little under 18mpg all highway.

a 944 is going to be harder to find, more expensive to insure/maintain/purchase/modify and less practical. (fold the back seats forward in the mustang and you have room for anything back there)

EDIT: And to tavern gnome, wow, another car Ive owned. i had a 91 legacy sport sedan, it had 90k on the clock when the auto tranny went out. as far as i can tell it is really difficult model to find, especially with a 5spd and i ultimately sold mine in favor of the mustang due to the fact that the auto was boring the hell out of me.

Yeah, the wagons never came as 5 speeds. Mine was swapped though ;)
