Smart going for the 85.5 944, but all is in vain if you're looking for a DD. My first car was a 944, and it didn't last for long. I had to juggle 2 944's at a time to keep one running consistently. Timing Belts, head gasket woes etc.
What I can tell you though, is that we had an 83 944 N/A which racked up well over 380,000 miles before the car was left in the dust. Preventative maintenance is key! If you're looking for a car that you drive to hell, and fix when shit goes wrong, then back away now. You've got to be 2 steps ahead of the 944 to be 1 step behind it.
A well tuned 944 is driving nirvana, and will certainly keep you busy in the garage.
On a side note, can anyone fill me in on why exactly rubber timing belts were used in place of a timing chain on the 944? That job is such a bitch.tasty

Get a camaro instead of the 'stang. Either way the cars will suck gas, but the camaro handles better, looks better, and is a little bit higher quality (not that that is saying much). I personally love 944's, but they are a pain to keep running. I'd go with a Subie as a daily, because of the AWD, a plethora of manual trannies, and decent looks. 1999-ish 2.5rs FTW ;)

And the 3rd gen f-body prices are up. I haven't seen to many nice ones or decent ones for what the OP is wanting to spend $2500. But The LT1 4th gens are at a good price range now but still out of reach of $2500. I have a 96 Firebird Formula that i did DD and it never let me down exept with the opti spark that was original at 128k miles. And it will get 28mpg on the open road, and i got abunch of bolt ones on it.
