fuck you, you know what I meant. I'm not talking about the head and shit like that, I'm talking about all the complicated electronic bullshit that makes the swap such a PITA. -
The electronics aren't the same Nando.
Nothing personal, you are the one here looking like the dumbass ;)
Asking you to sit on your hands was just a public service annoucement. In case you didn't figure out what that really meant... "shut up"Tenured Automotive Service Professional - Avid BMW Enthusiast

Electronics aren't the same but they are just as complex if your looking to transfer, here's another from UK.

Thats what I was looking for. That is still OBD1 thought isnt it? Being s50b32 it should be, but thats cool enough. Individual throttle bodies and didnt those motors have somewhere around 300hp? I know the euro s52 had like 320, but i thought the euro s50 was like 280.Old and improved:

The motor in question is indeed a M54.
The M50 and M52 engines can be fit into the e30 easily. The M50 and M52 engines have exchangeable parts (EX: You can put a m50 head on an m52 block).
The M50 and M52 are not exchangeable with the M54.
The S54B32 (E46 M3 engine) to my knowledge has not been placed into an E30...yet. However it looks like someone was able to put an M54 engine into an E30...I am impressed.
What I do not understand is why someone went through the hassle of overcoming all the bullshit electronics on the M54B30 for a mere 225hp when that same person could have fitted an M50B30 or M52B32 for (probably) less money and 240hp+2004 SL600 - Current

Actually, those arn't the proper ones. Regardless of country, engines in M cars are designated with an S, because they are Motorsport engines. The '95 M3 in the US has the S50 B30, and the 3.2 being S52 B32.Originally posted by MystikalFinally, someone in the States who knows the proper M3 engine codes.Originally posted by lukasbmwM50B30 or M52B32 for (probably) less money and 240hp+
Not good enough for ya'? Disassemble any E36 M3 engine, you'll find S50 (or S52) stampings atop the pistons (along with bore size and static compression)
(for all intensive purposes, lukas knows that the S is designated to the Motorsport engines.)
edit: on-topic, the motor in question in the thread is definately an E46/E39 M54.
