M50B30 or M52B32 for (probably) less money and 240hp+
Finally, someone in the States who knows the proper M3 engine codes.
Actually, those arn't the proper ones. Regardless of country, engines in M cars are designated with an S, because they are Motorsport engines. The '95 M3 in the US has the S50 B30, and the 3.2 being S52 B32.
Not good enough for ya'? Disassemble any E36 M3 engine, you'll find S50 (or S52) stampings atop the pistons (along with bore size and static compression)
(for all intensive purposes, lukas knows that the S is designated to the Motorsport engines.)
Interesting. Maybe BMWUSA refers to them as S code engines, but to the rest of the world they are referred to as big M50/M52's. I guess it was for simplicity, but it just confusses the hell out of me. Curious: Does the U.S. S50 use the same pistons as the Global S50?

To the rest of the world, S50 refers to the 6-butterfly Euro motor--they don't work the US S50 engine very much. No, piston design is different.
