the issue of reliability was in the original post. what about a issue or practicality? what is practical about a 2 seater convertible with no trunk space? has the OP even sat in a s2k? im 6'4" and i cant close the drivers door in the thing. i don't think the OP mentioned anything once about which car is faster, what is rice and whats not. it was all about what is more reliable.
my answer is this, neither. find a late 90s low mileage 328is and call it good. you have a bulletproof m52 motor, while not the fastest is reliable. its also low on insurance. seeing that you're in california itll pass deq easily and there are tons of them. take the rest of the cash you got and pay insurance, rent or do something more constructive with it.
Massively OT: i'm not sure where the rest of these sub 300 post noobies came from but some of the BS you post is dragging this forum down. the majority of whats being posted is more post whoring and not very informative or even on topic.
go back to learning whats what on e30tech or bimmerforum's. i don't get how none of you haven't been banned for stupidity yet.Comment

With the choice of E30S50 vs. S2000 I would have to go for the S2000. The only downfall (to me) is the soft top. I'd get a hard-top and call it done. I've talked to a lot of S2000 owners and they all love them. The major complaint I hear is the lack of torque. I've talked to a couple who were considering selling the S2000 because the lack of torque sucks for a DD. I told them to suck it up.
However, if the decision was between an E30 M3 and S2000 however, I'd go for the M3.
I've owned a bunch of M20 cars and I'm ready for a 4-banger.
On that note, you could also get an E36 M3. It would be easily in your price range, and they are bullet proof.Comment

I had just about given up on this thread because of all of the morons, but what a coincidence. In addition to having owned an S2000 and an s50e30, my current DD is an '05 STi.
If you absolutely need practicality, get the STi - it's just as reliable, if not moreso, than the S2000. However, in your price range, you're only going to be able to afford a high mileage '04 (are they really $15k??). As a college student, I don't think you need the practicality, so enjoy the S2000 while you can. If you want a car to tinker with (you will likely have to), get the s50e30.
I'd also like to state that I misread the thread to begin with - I thought you were leaving school, not going into it. I'd take the $15k and spend it on things that are more important in college, like beer.Comment

So what? That's why you launch at a higher rpm so it's always in vtec. You might be forgetting that f20s LOVE to r3v. You can redline it all the way to 9k everyday with no problems.
So what if the power in an f20 is from 5900-9000rpm? That's like me complaining that an s50 will explode at 9000rpm... They are two different cars and you have to drive them differently. IMO the higher I'm revving, the more fun I'm having.
I highly doubt you stomp s2ks.
E36 m3 0-60: 6.1s (that's s50 #'s) 5.5 for the s52 genius
S2k: 0-60 5.5s
Anyway, this thread is getting really ignorant. I'm out:???:Check out Undr8d Empire on Facebook: www.facebook.com/Undr8dEmpireLlc
