IMO, get Kumho MX's and leave it at that.

would 225/50-16 work good or would 205/55-16 be better?

Neither of them, those are oversized. 225/45-16 or 205/50-16.

DON'T run oversized tires....even if you can get a deal on them.

Your fender liner will not forgive you. And E30 M3 offset bushings will only make the rubbing in front of the wheel worse.

If you are hell bent on using the tirerack:

              205/50/16 - Pirelli P Zero Nero's

              225/45/16 - ES100's (Nice catch TJ, mis-typed that one)

              205/45/17 - ES100's

              215/40/17 - Kumho MX's

IMO, those are the best bets for you $$.

For the ES100's he should be at 225/45-16 or 205/50-16, or 205/40-17.

And what would you recommend besides Tire Rack?

TJ....by my calcs, 215/40/17 is where one would want to be. That bring you to 23.7" overall diameter, still a shade small (looking for a 24" diameter), but acceptable for sure. If I am off, please correct me.

There are other tires out there besides what the Tirerack sells. Toyo's are one name that comes to mind, Falken's as well. Tirerack is certainly a great source for a lot of merchandies, but there are other, much smaller companies around as well that can help you out.

I have the GS-D3's and they are sticky and virtually silent.
I have 5k miles on them and they are at 9/32" tread depth. I plan to use them for more than 20k miles without issues. These are a great tire for spirited street driving, but Wil showed how they can look after a few right hand turns at the track
